Bertoia emigrated to America in 1930. He studied at the Cass Technical High School in Detroit and trained on a scholarship at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan.
She studied architecture at the Milan Politecnico in 1951 and worked as an interior designer in the studio of Marco Zanuso until 1963. In 1979, she had her own design firm in Milan.
