Unveiling of the 'Myto' cantilever chair designed by Konstantin Grcic for Plank

On October 24 2007, during the opening of K2007, the world´s biggest trade fair for the plastics industry in Duesseldorf, the 'Myto' chair has been officially presented on the BASF booth in the presence of its creator, Konstantin Grcic, acclaimed industrial designer.

The chair made of easy-flow plastic Ultradur® High Speed has been developed with the Chemical Company BASF and is produced by Italian company Plank.

I can't offer any reasoning (or don't have time to think about it) but
thats one of the ugliest chairs I've seen in a long time.

I have yet to see a Grcic design I find a let down ,
but this one goes bit further- I love it- it is a rather masculine chair ,
which to my eye is quite unusual and the colors are uber chic and subtle ... ...
And I hope the material is suitable for outdoor use.

THANK you DA for this find!

Most of the time I am impressed by Konstantin Grcic's unique ability to reduce products to their essentials and make them beautiful in proportion and elegant in simple and convincing detailing. The Myto cahir does one thing very well. It shows how far BASF has come with their modified PBT (Polybutylene terephthalate). The Ultradur is simply a wonderful plastic.
As to shape, comfort and function...The forward slanting seat a courageous thing to do. It looks unusual because most chairs do the oposite, but nobody has ever contradicted in a credible way Dr. Mandel's theories on the forward slanted seated position and Grcic applies it very well. In past attempts the slanded surface created the problem that the user tends to slight forward. The textured surface of the Myto prevents that effectively. Although it is not a direct consequence of it, I understand that the horizontal stacking (like shopping carts) was more or less suggested by that forward slanted seat. What I fail to understand (would it not be nice to have Konstantin himself on the forum) is why the width of the back is so narrow. I can see a number of technical (draft angle) reasons, but not of such a magnitude that they can not be overcome. I am sure the chair lost in stability because of it and at least visually it does not seem to offer the safety that comes with comfort. All in all it lacks the simplicity in shape that Konstantin Grcic is known and appreciated for. Could it be that there was a little bit too much imput from the BASF side....
