Ed Annink, from design agency Ontwerpwerk, has designed a line of kitchenware for Jamie Oliver.
These products will be introduced at the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt from February 8 to 12.
The line consists of bowls in different sizes, a colander, storage boxes, sealable measuring cups, cutting boards, a salt and pepper mill, knives and a knife set.
The products have been manufactured in a variety of materials. The main material is melamine, a synthetic resin.
The colander and the mixing bowls have a matte exterior; the inside of these products has a high gloss finish. The cutting boards and the knife set are made either of bamboo or polyethylene. The knives are manufactured in stainless steel with a tactile rubber (polyurethane) handle. The measuring cups and the storage boxes are made of clear san (a mix of polystyrene and acrylic).

This is a nice exemple of branding taking over from design. I love what Jamie Oliver does in the kitchen, what he does and has done for children's food habits, but his choice of products is not great. There seems to be a kind of trend on the british islands for this (sorry to generalize but Nigella Lawson’s living kitchen range with Sebastian Conran is another exemple) combination of a well known designer serving an even better known chef...and branded name. I might be blinded by the heavy snow outside my window but I do not see a good reason behind these Ed Annick products. There are both better colanders and better mixing bowls on the market and I do not see any attempt to improuve the existing state of the art. It might be a little bit harsh but "if you can not improuve on it don't thouch it"...we have already too much, let's not add to it just for the sake of adding...and if "royalties are so low that you can not put any thought in it"(a comment a very well known British designer gave me recently) I think you have another reason not to touch it.
