The first Solar Bus Stop in Spain

The Solar Bus stop (SBS) is a sustainable and innovative system of informational boards for public transportations that functions integrally with solar energy. The SBS increases the quality of the service, since the user, upon arriving at the stop, will be punctually informed of the time of arrival of the buses from different lines, until six. The information updates every 30 seconds and also offers other informations of interest for the user.
This is the first solar bus stop in the Spanish territory, that is totally self-sufficient, that uses only its own energy resources and doesn’t need wiring.

The solar bus stop has been developed by 4 students of the Investigation + Education (I+ ED Barcelona) under the supervision of Horge Perez. This team worked in collaboration with the urban furniture company Capmar, specialized in the production of urban furniture.

Very nice, it's good to see these sorts of developments happening in Spain. Despite high unemployment and an economy in desperate straits, this is precisely the sort of thinking that is going to make Spain even stronger in the years to come.

Sorry guys, this is not the way Spain is going to take it's sunny place amoung industrialized nations. It is not enough to put a solar panel on any equipment to make it well designed! Just look at a few details:
1- the posts are way too large for this purpose. Why saving energy on one hand and throwing it away with the other.
2- The way the post is bend is simply bad workmanship. Especially the night picture shows how the bend deformed, pulling outward on the sides, and collapsing on the inside.
3- I see no adjustment plate on the ground, and yet the need for it is very well demonstrated because the contraption is leaning like the tower of Pisa.
4- Look where the graphics are just under the lighting fixture. That's about 3 meters high and leaning backward! Good design is also good ergonomics, not just ignoring them!
5- I suspect that even in the Barcelona sun, not all busstops are in the right direction to capture maximum solar energy. A design in which the position of the solar panel is dependent on the thesign of the support means that the panel can not be turned toward the sun.
6- I could go on and on...but it all means: back to the drawing board!

While the actual design needs work, these kinds of projects can help make our world greener. It is only just a sign, but it still uses energy which has to be created. It will take a while before we can get the bigger things green like vehicles and buildings, but the more small things that we can cross over, the easier it will be for people to adapt. We won’t be able to make everything green at once, but starting on the things that are more easily convertible will make people more accepting when it comes to having to convert the big things.
