Far Foods by James Reynolds

James Reynolds' Far Foods project is an alternative packaging for supermarket. It shows the distance that some foods travel from and the resultant carbon dioxide released during the journey.

The receipt features a boarding card style tear-off strip.

James Reynolds has recently graduated from Kingston University studying Graphic Design. He lives and works in London.

Labeling like this should be mandatory. It is the kind of information that consumers need and want and there is no good reason not to do it! This is how we will get to a more responsible use of our resources, zillions of small steps end up bieung quite a leap.

Sorry for the spelling mistakes. I can not figure out how to edit it either...
Some people on another site have been commenting on this very same project in less flatering terms. Amoung other things they point out that a remote country of origin could very well have a more eco-friendly way of growing than the farm that is close by. I am not knowledgeable enough in agricultural technology so I asked my certified biological neighbour and he tells me that the differences are marginal and that his products are certfied biological, but in some cases he is in fact spending more energy than a non biological farm...So I stick with the idea that consumers should be informed and distance certainly is an important factor.

This idea definitely points out things that people don’t think about. They might be looking for food that has been grown green, but they don’t think about how far that “green” food has to travel to get to them. If the food has to travel far, it makes it a moot point of being green. By putting this info in their face, it will encourage them to buy products closer to home. Which will also support the local economies.
