Pop up 'Cube' Table

While working in the office, we often require a number of gadgets and objects, which often turns the workspace into a muddled place. Providing a solution, Swiss designer Matthias Pugin has devised an innovative office desk that works as a planar board to keep your objects organized and provides a clutter-free workspace.

The 'Cube', as the designer calls his design, unlike most other tables is not only a planar board, but it provides different sized colorful cubes that can be used as storage space.

The Cube works like a ballpoint pen. All you need to do is push the cube down, let it go, and the cube pops up. With the Cube, there’s no need for a mess on your desk, you can have the mess in your desk.

The cubes are ingenious design tools. Not only do they come with a variety of colors, from the looks of it, you can arrange it to have different shapes too.

Wow. Genius. I need to know how it is made. What is the mechanism that pops the cubes up? When you push the cubes, do they push down on springs? How do they stay level? I wonder if the designer has had it built yet? I'm bursting with questions. But, I just love this.

why do I feel like I too often have negative things to say about
contemporary experimental design? Anyway its obviously a
3d model, I'm curious to know what the proposed material is
and just how one would write or draw on such a surface, also
I'm concerned about obects jamming at the back as you push
the blocks downwards or any object doing the same, even a pen
on the surface would be an irritation if it gets caught...
so many problems when draws work so well.
Perhaps as a vertical storage system it might work better.

Very nice idea. I think the above comment is relevant ... that it may not be a suitable surface to write on, with the borders of the blocks not providing a smooth surface. But the design could work around that by not putting pop up blocks over the whole surface so there 's a good writing surface available front and center.

Don't think I could concentrate with all the colors!

playful design.

If you place a thin glass over it then the surface would be good enough to write on :)

Don't you think laying a thin layer of glass over the top kind defeats the purpose? "Oh, let me get my calculator. Can you help me clear off the entire desk and then hold this sheet of glass for me...." Kind of hobbles the whole convenience aspect of the design, don't you think?

Sure, obstacles abound as to the flawless functioning of the 'pop-up' cubes but the overall idea is sound and it makes for a whimsical and charming design. If we balked at every possible stumbling block nothing would ever get built. Personally I applaud the designer's imagination and ingenuity.
