Dyson Air Multiplier

This is Dyson's latest invention: The Dyson Air Multiplier™.
The fan works very differently to conventional fans. It uses Air Multiplier™ technology to draw in air and amplify it 15 times, producing an uninterrupted stream of smooth air. With no blades or grill.

Air is accelerated through an annular aperture. This creates a jet of air that passes over a 16° airfoil-shaped ramp, channeling its direction. Using an airfoil-shaped ramp (like a cross-section through an airplane wing), airflow is amplified 15 times.

Blades cause buffeting - The blades on conventional fans cause unpleasant buffeting because they chop the air before it hits you.

No blades. No buffeting - Air Multiplier™ technology amplifies surrounding air, giving an uninterrupted stream of smooth air.

This is a great idea to conserve energy. Since it its getting colder, this is perfect than those electric fans that don't produce that much.

A Chinese college student invented this fan first early this year.

Can you provide any evidence or background? I am not being combative
just curious.

Several years ago an Australian designer began
marketing a product which I know was a direct copy of a
Danish design students prototype, featured on a
very obscure website. I was not impressed.

I do not think that there is much of an invention here. It is a smart application of the Venturi effect where an airflow is accelerated by a narrowing of a tube. The small air outlets all around the ring are used as the initial airflow and act as a continuation of the Venturi shaped wall. In other words, the ring is the start of the Venturi shape and the air flow that comes through the base continues that typical Venturi shape....smart thinking.
It is a relief to see that Dyson can do other things than over expressive shapes like the vacuum cleaner and the blade...He must have found himself a good designer...you should not give that kind of nasty comments Koen!!
