Designed in-house by designer Willem Heeffer, Fuse 'Can Lights' are constructed from discarded and salvaged Heinz Beanz cans and Campbell's Soup cans.
 |
With the help of Dublin’s many restaurants and cafés who collect the tin
cans, these everyday waste objects are turned into functional pendant
lights. The lights celebrate the cross over between popular culture and
sustainability.

Fuse 'Can Lights' are on sale at Fuse Finds only.

Christine Outram and a team of MIT students are the US winners of the James Dyson Award competition with their Copenhagen Wheel – a wheel that turns a regular bike into a smart, electric hybrid.

This teched-out wheel allows riders to capture the energy dissipated
when breaking and cycling and save it for when they need a boost. Like
most cutting-edge technology, the Copenhagen Wheel is controlled through
a rider’s smart phone.

Developed by a small team of students at the SENSEable City Lab, MIT, The Copenhagen Wheel is a new emblem for sustainable urban mobility that improves the cycling experience, offers a cost-effective transportation alternative to cars and fosters a community of cyclists in cities. Smart, responsive and elegant, it transforms existing bicycles quickly into hybrid electric-bikes with regeneration and real-time sensing capabilities.

Its sleek red hub not only contains a motor, batteries and an internal gear system – helping cyclists overcome hilly terrains and long distances - but also includes environmental and location sensors that provide data for cycling-related mobile applications. Cyclists can use this data to plan healthier bike routes, to achieve their exercise goals or to create new connections with other cyclists. Through sharing their data with friends or their city, they are also contributing to a larger pool of information from which the whole community can benefit.

The 1960s was an optimistic era of unprecedented change, and its heady
zeitgeist was captured in the amazing range of artwork that adorned the
magazines of the time.
|

Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s is a colossal survey of magazine
artwork from the Swinging Sixties. It not only provides revelatory
insight into the extraordinary artistic talents of the illustrators
featured--such as Austin Briggs, Lynn Buckham, Antonio Lopez and Coby
Whitmore--but also tellingly elucidates the social aspirations of this
era of political optimism and sexual freedom.

Featuring over 1,000 inventive and stylistically diverse illustrations, the book traces the decade's dizzyingly swift evolution from the homemaking ethos of romantic coupledom to the stylish liberation of mini-skirted Chelsea girls and the psychedelic palette that evolved towards the decade's close, conjuring a fabulous and euphoric pageant of 1960s pop culture from rediscovered artworks by the very best illustrators of the day.

An inspirational sourcebook for contemporary designers and fans of 1960s culture.

New Designers is an annual London showcase for recent design graduates, returning this month for its tenth year. The New Designer of the Year award went to Tortie Hoare, a furniture, design and craftsmanship student from Bucks University, for her project 'Leatherwork Furniture Collection'.
Judges Comments: The judges celebrated Tortie’s ‘innovation, personal passion and an incredible sensitivity to materials which has reinvented a lost process from medieval times to produce an outstanding collection of contemporary furniture.’
Now, instead of trying to find a job, Tortie has decided to pursue her leatherwork and see where it takes her. She will be spending some of the prize monies on leather for a new collection.
 |
“I have never had a reaction like this,’ said Tortie. ‘I have been
shocked by the interest. With all of my furniture I have used the
process of forming leather to dictate the piece. It was not until I came
across the French medieval process of boiled leather that I could
create solid, strong forms in an eco-friendly way. “
