Centennial of Grand Concourse
UNITED STATES
05-Mar-09> 04-Apr-10 |
 |
Bronx, NY - A visionary feat of 19th century city planning, largely taken for granted by 21st-century New Yorkers, the Grand Concourse flows through the Bronx from Van Cortland Park at the top to East 138th Street at the south. Inspired by the Champs Élysées in Paris and designed by Alsatian-born engineer Louis Risse, the famous thoroughfare was originally conceived in 1870 as a means of connecting the working class of Manhattan to the green parks of the north Bronx. After nearly four decades of planning, engineering, and construction, the Grand Concourse officially opened in November 1909.
Now in 2009 The Bronx Museum of the Arts examines the past, present, and future of the Grand Concourse in Intersections, a year-long, three-part centennial celebration. The three exhibitions comprising Intersections are: Intersections: The Grand Concourse at 100 (March 5 - July 20, 2009); Intersections: The Grand Concourse Commissions (August 2, 2009 - January 4, 2010); and Intersections: The Grand Concourse Beyond 100 (November 1 - January 4, 2010).

The Design Center presents an exhibition of contemporary work inspired by historic lace. TDC has commissioned three internationally-renowned artists and designers - whose works are often inspired by traditional lace imagery - to mine its historic Quaker Lace archives for inspiration and to reconceptualize conventional notions of lace. European designers Tord Boontje and Demakersvan and Canadian artist Cal Lane explore the intersection of luxurious hand-craftsmanship with modern, mass production techniques through new, site-specific installations.

Element - Cecil Balmond
JAPAN
16-Jan-10> 22-Mar-10 |
 |
The new geometry that Balmond has created has greatly increased the possibilities of contemporary architecture, freeing it from a closed, static paradigm based on rectangles, triangles, and circles, and transforming it into something dynamic, organic, and full of complexity. Although he makes full use of modern computer and construction technology, the roots of Balmond’s ideas are simple algorithms that code a building like genes build an organism. Balmond breathes life into architecture, imparting it with a pulsing, beating heart of its own.

Maki Umehara ’Silver Sea’
GERMANY
22-Jan-10> 03-Mar-10 |
 |
Born at Nagoya, Japan in 1976 the artist Maki Umehara deals in her works with the articulation of different forms through objects.
The converging of artwork and circumfluent space as well as the change in perception of material under distinct outside conditions is locating Maki Umehara’s work in adjacency of the Japanese Metabolists. So the artist maintains a close dialogue with architectonical design vocabulary. Already visible in the sculpture The 6th day, the artist tries to translate architecture sketches in three-dimensional space experience.

UNITED KINGDOM
22-Jan-10> 07-Mar-10 |

The exhibition features a collection of over 75 classic chairs from the Design Museum collection, each of which illustrates a landmark in aesthetics, functionality, materials, production technology or sustainability. From Michael Thonet’s discovery of how to mass manufacture bentwood chairs in the late 19th Century and Marcel Breuer’s pioneering use of tubular steel at the Bauhaus in the 1920s, to Charles and Ray Eames’ plywood innovations in the 1940s, the pop inspired plastic chairs of Verner Panton and Joe Colombo in the 1960s and recent advances by contemporary designers, such as Jasper Morrison and the Bouroullec brothers, the chair has long been a focus of experimentation for modern designers.

Action! Design over Time
UNITED STATES
05-Feb-10> 31-Mar-10 |
 |
Objects are not still. And yet design is often considered in terms of static aesthetic and functional qualities, without much consideration of trajectory in time or relationships with people. The objects presented in Action! Design over Time reveal the often overlooked dimension of temporality, providing a deeper understanding of contemporary design. Some of these objects embody frozen moments in time, whether crafted by hand (like Ingo Maurer’s Porca Miseria! chandelier, which is made of broken dishes) or crystallized by a computer using a digital manufacturing machine (as with Ammar Eloueini’s CoReFab chair).
The exhibition is organized by Paola Antonelli.

Global Design
SWITZERLAND
12-Feb-10> 30-May-10 |
 |
Globalization, along with all its implications and repercussions in highly diverse areas of society, is a much discussed theme. One aspect which has so far been neglected is the relationship of globalization and design. This exhibition now shows the effects that the globalized world has had on design since the 1970s and how design is developed for the globalized world. It is based on a concept of design which includes architecture, graphics, media, fashion, product and industrial design just as much as the design of spheres of life or product processes.

Modernism at Risk
UNITED STATES
17-Feb-10> 01-May-10 |
 |
Modernism represents the defining movement of twentieth-century architecture and design; yet, every day, important works of modern architecture are destroyed or inappropriately altered. The solutions for protecting them can be as individual as the threats that endanger them. These threats range from physical deterioration to perceived economic or functional obsolescence to public apathy. Often, the greatest challenges to saving modern buildings can be the innovative design and technical features that help define them as significant achievements in the history of architecture.

Edwina Ashton - No more furniture
UNITED KINGDOM
19-Feb-10> 28-Mar-10 |
 |
Edwina Ashton’s videos, performances and drawings create oblique and absurd concoctions of character and narrative. They explore the allure and peculiarity of eccentricity and idiosyncrasy, often through the use of insects, animals and peculiar creatures given human attributes to ridicule the perversity and tragedy embedded in polite behaviour and the rules that govern social interaction.
Her exhibition will feature another new departure - sculptures that give permanent form to the distinctive physical vocabulary found in the costumes and props of her films and performances.

Athens Bench Mark is comprised of two competitions and a volunteer program: The first competition is the Athens Bench Mark industrial design contest sure to give a makeover of new benches throughout the city. The public will view and vote for the best 100 proposals and a jury will decide the final three works whose creators will receive cash and prizes. At least one project will be implemented and produced en masse to gear up Athens for the change! The second competition is a visual arts competition called Future Bench, where artistic imagination runs rapid. 50 projects will be voted by the public whose art works will be showcased in the great art exhibition Future Bench! The artistic work rated most popular will receive the Audience Award of the Future Bench.

Building with earth Design and technology of a sustainable architecture
BELGIUM
11-Mar-10> 11-Mar-10 |
 |
There’s a growing interest for clay and architecture, a fascinating fusion of low- and high-tech, innovative design and technology of ancient logic. Clay is no longer only for alternative-ecological architects, but also for architects who are discovering the benefits of the material and how it can be used. His oeuvre includes buildings and landscape design: from noisewalls, cemeteries and busstations to houses, shops, schools and congress centres. On this evening presentation you will see how the different earthen building styles (from silt plaster to rammed earth) can be integrated in today’s modern architecture. This fourth debate will be animated by a lecture by Martin Rauch, A pioneer of modern technical and creative applications for traditional rammed earth construction.

Particular attention will be paid to the question how the current global economic crisis serves to accelerate or modify these tendencies. In conclusion, discussion will turn to how the crisis of neoliberal ideology may simultaneously be an opportunity to imagine urban concepts which exceed the primacy of the economic manoeuvres.
