Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday
GERMANY
15-Oct-11> 01-May-12 |
 |
Rudolf Steiner is regarded as one of the most influential - and also one of the most controversial - reformers of the twentieth century. He founded the Waldorf schools and advocated a holistic view of humanity which shows its influence in many areas of our lives today - including bio-cosmetics, a heightened environmental consciousness and biodynamic agricultural products, to name a few examples. Steiner inspired artists such as Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Joseph Beuys. He was one of the founders of "organic architecture" and also developed a unique stylistic idiom in the area of furniture design. The Vitra Design Museum exhibition "Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday" is the first major retrospective on this universal thinker and artist.

Beauty in All Things: Japanese Art and Design
UNITED STATES
22-Nov-11> 03-Jun-12 |
 |
In Japan, beauty can be found in objects from the most refined to the most humble, often with standards very different from those in the Western world. Drawn largely from the MAD collection, Beauty in All Things features contemporary Japanese artists and designers who create innovative works within these ideals of beauty. Some push traditional techniques and materials in new directions, and others experiment with new technologies and materials within the context of historical practice.
In this exhibition, specific works are highlighted that exemplify Japanese concepts of beauty, including shizen, wabi sabi, and datsuzoku.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec - Album
GERMANY
03-Feb-12> 28-May-12 |
 |
The brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec rank among the most influential contemporary designers. Their ideas are often inspired by shapes and structures of nature. The exhibition presents sketches and conceptual drawings of the Bouroullecs and draws attention towards the medium of drawing itself, which has kept its importance even in times of computer visualizations. This offers fascinating insights into the inspirations of the designers, but also in some preliminary stages of their final creations.

SuperBodies
BELGIUM
04-Feb-12> 27-May-12 |
 |
SuperBodies, the 3rd Hasselt triennial explores the fascination of many artists and designers for the way in which our body secretly moulds and shapes our experiences. This exhibition does not just re-present the body. It presents the body in all of its often half-conscious operations. A large, interactive ensemble of works from visual artists, choreographers and (fashion-) designers makes us see and feel the body as the source of our thoughts and emotions. Upcoming and internationally established artists and designers operate on the boundaries between disciplines to unravel the mysteries of the body. The whole of the city of Hasselt will qualify as a stage, but the main focus will be on larger venues such as the Cultural Center, the house for contemporary art Z33, the Fashion Museum, CIAP and the city Museum Het Stadsmus.

Liberation of Light on Tour
NETHERLANDS
09-Mar-12> 18-May-12 |
 |
Poetic and living installations by artist Daan Roosegaarde. Surprising lighting objects. And the remarkable use of light and lighting in public spaces and for buildings. The exhibition Liberation of Light, curated by Yksi Design, shows that Leds are much more than small, sustainable ’lamps’. Light has literally been freed from the casing of that familiar bulb. A light revolution has manifest itself - as big as or perhaps even greater than the invention of the lightbulb 150 years ago.

Guillaume Bardet, responding to a command, designed each day, from September 21 2009 to September 20 2010, an intimate object. Of these human and artistic performances, were born 365 ceramic objects from the country of Dieulefit, made of Sèvres porcelain and of industrial ceramics (CERALEP). The solo exhibition shown by Grand Hornu Images presents the results of this work while also addressing the different phases of inspiration, the way an artist works when he is driven by the desire to evoke the slow time (one year) and the short time (one day).

EXHIBITION
Roy Lichtenstein
UNITED STATES
23-May-12> 03-Sep-12 |
 |
This exhibition, the first assessment of the full scope and breadth of Roy Lichtenstein’s career since his death in 1997, aims to offer a new, scholarly assessment of the work of this foremost Pop artist. Lichtenstein is an artist whose work is widely known, reproduced, copied, and parodied-he is an artist that we seem to know well but in fact the true diversity and complexity of his oeuvre is little understood. Presenting over 130 paintings and sculptures, as well as over 30 little- or never-before-seen drawings and collages, this exhibition gives full consideration to all periods of Lichtenstein’s career, including but not limited to, pre-Pop expressionist work, classic Pop Romance and War cartoon paintings, Mirrors, Brushstrokes, Explosions, Artist’s Studio paintings, late nudes, and Chinese Landscapes.
