Brunfaut’s. Progressist architects.
BELGIUM
08-Feb-13> 09-Jun-13 |
 |
Pupils of Victor Horta (a leading figure in Belgium’s Art Nouveau movement), Gaston, Fernand and Maxime Brunfaut were responsible for many architectural landmarks constructed in Brussels and throughout Belgium between the 1920s and 1960s. Children of the 20th century who believed in a better future, the Brunfauts expressed this hope through their progressive architecture: a style where the function, shape and arrangement of the elements are dictated by social concerns. Archives, drawings, models and previously unpublished accounts will illustrate this in-depth look at modernist architecture.

Louis Kahn - The Power of Architecture
GERMANY
23-Feb-13> 11-Aug-13 |
 |
The American architect Louis Kahn (1901-1974) is regarded as one of the great master builders of the twentieth century. With complex spatial compositions and a choreographic mastery of light, Kahn created buildings of archaic beauty and powerful universal symbolism. Among his most important works are the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The exhibition ’Louis Kahn - The Power of Architecture’, presented by the Vitra Design Museum, is the first major retrospective of Kahn’s work in two decades.

As it were ... So to speak: A Museum Collection in Dialogue with Barbara Bloom
UNITED STATES
15-Mar-13> 04-Aug-13 |
 |
Artist Barbara Bloom creates an installation engaging with the museum collection, the first exhibition in a projected series featuring contemporary artists interacting with collection works. The multi-faceted artist Barbara Bloom has built her career questioning appearances and commenting on how we value objects. She has been invited to mine the museum’s collection of 25,000 pieces in order to create a four-gallery installation. Bloom’s work, which includes installation, photography, graphic design, and film, explores such themes as absence and presence, gazing and giving, breaking and repair, and how things can stand in for people and ideas. This installation is planned as the first in a series that will invite contemporary artists to engage with the permanent collection.

A passion for Jean Prouvé
ITALY
06-Apr-13> 08-Sep-13 |
 |
A Passion for Jean Prouvé is an exhibition devoted to the furniture and architecture by the French designer Jean Prouvé from the collection owned by Laurence and Patrick Seguin, who discovered the work of Jean Prouvé, in the late 1980s, through his furniture designs. They were immediately struck by the unique aesthetic of these pieces, where the artistic skill lies wholly in imperceptible technical mastery devoted to enhancing the strength of the materials. Now presenting a number of works from their private collection for the first time: around 40 pieces by Jean Prouvé, most of which are prototypes or extremely rare and the Maison Metropole ( 8X12 meters) now to be mounted for the first time on the Lingotto track. Taking four people three consecutive days to assemble, a stop-motion film will be made of the construction process, with video footage streamed on the Pinacoteca website.

Claes Oldenburg: The Street and The Store/Mouse Museum/Ray Gun Wing
UNITED STATES
14-Apr-13> 05-Aug-13 |
 |
Claes Oldenburg’s audacious, witty, and profound depictions of everyday objects have earned him a reputation as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. This exhibition examines the beginnings of Oldenburg’s extraordinary career with an in-depth look at his first two major bodies of work: The Street (1960) and The Store (1961-64). During this intensely productive period Oldenburg redefined the relationship between painting and sculpture and between subject and form. On view in The Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium are Oldenburg’s Mouse Museum and Ray Gun Wing. Created in the 1970s, these two architectural structures present careful arrangements of readymade objects alongside various tests and experiments from Oldenburg’s studio.

Galerie Nathalie Obadia is presenting the first solo exhibition by Pieter Schoolwerth in Brussels, following Portraits of Paintings at the gallery in Paris in 2011. The show is made up of recent works which, like the series After Troy at Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York in November 2012, explore the fecundity of Pieter Schoolwerth’s latest pictorial researches. Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec. Momentané
FRANCE
26-Apr-13> 01-Sep-13 |
 |
The Arts Décoratifs Nave is showcasing all facets of the work of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Conceived like a retrospective, the exhibition is retracing every stage of their international career, including their very latest creations. The scenography they have designed for this 1,000 square-metre exhibition highlights their innovative research into the partitioning of space. Great admirers of Charlotte Perriand, like her they are intensely interested in modularity, a concern they have explored in creations such as the Lit Clos sleeping cabin, the Alcove Sofa (Vitra), and lightweight screens built by assembling basic elements: the Cloud shelf-partition modules (Cappelini), and the Algues (Vitra) and North Tiles (Kvadrat) modular partitions. Beneath an enormous textile vault, their presentation of all these pieces created over the past fifteen years has been adapted to structure this extraordinary space in the Arts Décoratifs Nave.

Inspired by her recent exploration of arborial themes and leaf forms as decorative elements in furniture and accessories, Pergay has created a group of new works that display meticulous, jewelry-like handwork in bronze and patinated copper. These materials represent an exciting departure for the celebrated Paris-based designer, who has long been admired for her pioneering use of stainless steel and ability to bring to it an unprecedented level of sensuality.

Daniel Clayman: Recent Works
UNITED STATES
04-May-13> 30-Jun-13 |
 |
Daniel Clayman utilizes a vocabulary of simple forms and muted colors to create architectural glass sculptures, often on a large scale. Although minimalist in aesthetic, Clayman’s pieces are created using a labor-intensive casting method. This process allows for his medium to take on a foggy and textured quality with a sense of depth, while still maintaining its translucency. The artist carefully uses light and shadow to accentuate subtle details in the glass, creating the illusion of mass in forms that are often hollow, describing volume in space.

Biennale di Venezia
ITALY
01-Jun-13> 24-Nov-13 |
 |
The title chosen by curator Massimiliano Gioni for the 55th International Art Exhibition is Il Palazzo Enciclopedico / The Encyclopedic Palace. Massimiliano Gioni introduced the choice of theme evoking the Italo-American self-taught artist Marino Auriti who "on November 16, 1955 filed a design with the US Patent office depicting his Palazzo Enciclopedico (The Encyclopedic Palace), an imaginary museum that was meant to house all worldly knowledge, bringing together the greatest discoveries of the human race, from the wheel to the satellite. Auriti’s plan was never carried out, of course, but the dream of universal, all-embracing knowledge crops up throughout history, as one that eccentrics like Auriti share with many other artists, writers, scientists, and prophets who have tried - often in vain - to fashion an image of the world that will capture its infinite variety and richness."

MoMA presents its first major exhibition on the work of Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, 1887-1965), encompassing his work as an architect, interior designer, artist, city planner, writer, and photographer. Conceived by guest curator Jean-Louis Cohen, the exhibition reveals the ways in which Le Corbusier observed and imagined landscapes throughout his career, using all the artistic techniques at his disposal, from his early watercolors of Italy, Greece, and Turkey, to his sketches of India, and from the photographs of his formative journeys to the models of his large-scale projects. His paintings and drawings also incorporate many views of sites and cities. All of these dimensions are present in the largest exhibition ever produced in New York of his prodigious oeuvre.
