Centennial of Grand Concourse
UNITED STATES
05-Mar-09> 04-Apr-10 |
 |
Bronx, NY - A visionary feat of 19th century city planning, largely taken for granted by 21st-century New Yorkers, the Grand Concourse flows through the Bronx from Van Cortland Park at the top to East 138th Street at the south. Inspired by the Champs Élysées in Paris and designed by Alsatian-born engineer Louis Risse, the famous thoroughfare was originally conceived in 1870 as a means of connecting the working class of Manhattan to the green parks of the north Bronx. After nearly four decades of planning, engineering, and construction, the Grand Concourse officially opened in November 1909.
Now in 2009 The Bronx Museum of the Arts examines the past, present, and future of the Grand Concourse in Intersections, a year-long, three-part centennial celebration. The three exhibitions comprising Intersections are: Intersections: The Grand Concourse at 100 (March 5 - July 20, 2009); Intersections: The Grand Concourse Commissions (August 2, 2009 - January 4, 2010); and Intersections: The Grand Concourse Beyond 100 (November 1 - January 4, 2010).

Antibodies-The Works of Fernando & Humberto Campana 1989 - 2009
GERMANY
16-May-09> 28-Feb-10 |
 |
The Brazilians Fernando and Humberto Campana are the most significant designers in present-day Latin America. In addition to designs for international manufacturers of furniture, lighting and home accessories, the majority of creations coming out of their Sao Paulo studio consist of custom-made one-off objects for the home characterized by recycling of found materials, idiosyncratic combinations and a surrealistic impression. The retrospective on the 20-year collaboration between the two brothers emphasizes the artistic working method and explains how the works take shape - from the first sculptures up to the interdisciplinary works of today - based on prototypes, experiments and one-off pieces.

We Were Exuberant and Still Had Hope. Ettore Sottsass
NETHERLANDS
12-Dec-09> 13-Feb-10 |
 |
With this exhibition of several works by Ettore Sottsass, all dated 1969, Marres presents a new position in the investigation of the 20th century and the idea of avant-garde. This exhibition presents several specific objects by an architect and designer who represents the idea of avant-garde par excellence. Time and again, Sottsass broke with an existing value system in order to formulate alternative concepts originating in a radical approach to the social and cultural function of objects.

A new symbol for Europe
NETHERLANDS
01-Jan-10> 28-Feb-10 |
 |
The current European flag with its twelve identical yellow stars placed in a circle on a blue field, was designed in 1955. Since then Europe has changed. About 30 million people from Middle Eastern, African and Asian origins are living and working in Europe. Besides these new cultures, the inter European immigration creates a new mix of cultures as well. In the last 50 years Europe has become a very fine maze of identities. What is the identity of this cultural, economical and dynamic Europe with its diversity in cultures, languages, traditions and believes? And what is the perception on Europe, from within and from the outside? How would a new symbol for Europe look like? Should it be one symbol? Or more?

Maki Umehara ’Silver Sea’
GERMANY
22-Jan-10> 03-Mar-10 |
 |
Born at Nagoya, Japan in 1976 the artist Maki Umehara deals in her works with the articulation of different forms through objects.
The converging of artwork and circumfluent space as well as the change in perception of material under distinct outside conditions is locating Maki Umehara’s work in adjacency of the Japanese Metabolists. So the artist maintains a close dialogue with architectonical design vocabulary. Already visible in the sculpture The 6th day, the artist tries to translate architecture sketches in three-dimensional space experience.

Back on the Map: Revisiting the New York State Pavilion at the 1964/1965 World’s Fair
UNITED STATES
17-Feb-10> 31-Mar-10 |
 |
The New York State Pavilion was considered one of the best architectural designs at the 1964/65 World’s Fair and is certainly one of the most iconic of structures to survive. Back on the Map: Revisiting the New York State Pavilion at the 1964/65 World’s Fair, explores the design and afterlife of Philip Johnson’s Pavilion and its main exhibit: a large-scale, terrazzo pavement of the Texaco Road Map of New York State.

Modernism at Risk
UNITED STATES
17-Feb-10> 01-May-10 |
 |
Modernism represents the defining movement of twentieth-century architecture and design; yet, every day, important works of modern architecture are destroyed or inappropriately altered. The solutions for protecting them can be as individual as the threats that endanger them. These threats range from physical deterioration to perceived economic or functional obsolescence to public apathy. Often, the greatest challenges to saving modern buildings can be the innovative design and technical features that help define them as significant achievements in the history of architecture.

EXHIBITION
Edwina Ashton - No more furniture
UNITED KINGDOM
19-Feb-10> 28-Mar-10 |
 |
Edwina Ashton’s videos, performances and drawings create oblique and absurd concoctions of character and narrative. They explore the allure and peculiarity of eccentricity and idiosyncrasy, often through the use of insects, animals and peculiar creatures given human attributes to ridicule the perversity and tragedy embedded in polite behaviour and the rules that govern social interaction.
Her exhibition will feature another new departure - sculptures that give permanent form to the distinctive physical vocabulary found in the costumes and props of her films and performances.

LECTURE
Rob Waller, Transformational information design
SLOVENIA
23-Feb-10> 23-Feb-10 |
 |
There is growing recognition that information design makes a vital contribution to modern industrial and digital societies. Poor information design can cause accidents, disadvantage the poorly educated, and even affect election results. Good information design helps people cope with the complex decisions they need to make in today’s world. Distinct from graphic design, it draws on a wide range of specialisms for its knowledge base, tools and techniques. It is both visual and verbal, and concerned with user needs more than artistic expression. Often invisible until something goes wrong, information design is a demanding and difficult field, under-represented in education and training.
This talk will focus on the role of the information designer as an intermediary between content owners and information users.
