Memorabilia - designing souvenirs
BELGIUM
10-Oct-11> 15-Mar-12 |
 |
Memorabilia - designing souvenirs wants to be a call for the evocative power of the objects which have the ability to stimulate our memory. The memory creates a time reciprocity, between past, present and future, and a space reciprocity, between here and elsewhere. The aim of this call and of the exhibition Memorabilia - designing souvenirs is to gather a selection of objects which contain representative and recognizable traces of the history of each designer, of his/her place of birth or living, of his/her ethnic group, of his/her cultural background, in order to offer the public a mosaic of little hints of souvenirs, of ways to the memories.

Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday
GERMANY
15-Oct-11> 01-May-12 |
 |
Rudolf Steiner is regarded as one of the most influential - and also one of the most controversial - reformers of the twentieth century. He founded the Waldorf schools and advocated a holistic view of humanity which shows its influence in many areas of our lives today - including bio-cosmetics, a heightened environmental consciousness and biodynamic agricultural products, to name a few examples. Steiner inspired artists such as Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky and Joseph Beuys. He was one of the founders of "organic architecture" and also developed a unique stylistic idiom in the area of furniture design. The Vitra Design Museum exhibition "Rudolf Steiner - Alchemy of the Everyday" is the first major retrospective on this universal thinker and artist.

Terence Conran - The Way We Live Now
UNITED KINGDOM
16-Nov-11> 04-Mar-12 |
 |
The Design Museum marks Sir Terence Conran’s 80th birthday with a major exhibition that explores his unique impact on contemporary life in Britain. Through his own design work, and also through his entrepreneurial flair, Conran has transformed the look of the British home. He has established a design studio and an architectural practice with a worldwide reach. He was the founder of Habitat and a pioneer of the new restaurant culture driven by a passion for simplicity. The Way We Live Now explores Conran’s impact whilst painting a picture of his design approach and inspirations. The exhibition traces his career from postwar austerity through to the new sensibility of the Festival of Britain in the 1950s, birth of the Independent Group with its flare for the avant-garde and the Pop Culture of the 1960s, to the design boom of the 1980s on to the present day.

Beauty in All Things: Japanese Art and Design
UNITED STATES
22-Nov-11> 03-Jun-12 |
 |
In Japan, beauty can be found in objects from the most refined to the most humble, often with standards very different from those in the Western world. Drawn largely from the MAD collection, Beauty in All Things features contemporary Japanese artists and designers who create innovative works within these ideals of beauty. Some push traditional techniques and materials in new directions, and others experiment with new technologies and materials within the context of historical practice.
In this exhibition, specific works are highlighted that exemplify Japanese concepts of beauty, including shizen, wabi sabi, and datsuzoku.

Industrious|Artefacts, the evolution of crafts
NETHERLANDS
19-Dec-11> 12-Feb-12 |
 |
In this exhibition, Studio Makkink & Bey examines the development of the craft by demonstrating interrelationships between production processes from the past of the Zuiderzee and contemporary translations of tailor-made industry. In the past few years, attention has been increasingly devoted to the design process, the action. Within that process, artists and designers create their own crafts and their own small-scale industries or artefacts.

Tapani Mod Collection
HONG KONG
13-Jan-12> 16-Feb-12 |
 |
Tapani...’s Mod collection is inspired by a playful look at contradictions in design. Taking the clean, non-complex form of the cube and applying this to modular structure, each piece is constructed with simple and strong forms. The cubes are taken further, produced with intricate detailing, rich materials and workmanship. Each cube is handcrafted at the hand of Artisans and can be twisted and turned to produce patterns while promoting interaction and creativity from the user.

Koenraad Dedobbeleer
SWITZERLAND
20-Jan-12> 10-Mar-12 |
 |
Koenraad Dedobbeleer is the 2009 recipient of the Mies van der Rohe grant of the city of Krefeld. He creates sculptures, objects, and site-related installations, which strike a chord and yet catch us off balance. His works abound in allusion, ironic commentary and art historical reference. The artist reinterprets everyday objects by subjecting them to subtle but effective modifications, for instance, by changing their size, color or material, or transplanting them into a modernist context. He draws attention to their relationship with the Modernism of the 1920s and 1930s and, at the same time, subverts it in interventions that range from near imperceptibility to large, stage-like productions.

SYMPOSIUM
Sustaining Sustainability
UNITED STATES
03-Feb-12> 03-Feb-12 |
 |
The accelerating transformation of the natural environment by humans suggests that the built environment is now becoming the context for ecosystems. It may no longer be possible to consider the built environment as merely asserting negative impact on the natural environment; instead, built and natural environments need to be equally considered as habitats for biodiversity. It now seems necessary to shift toward a nonanthropocentric model that favors the interaction of species with the built environment. On an urban scale, such efforts have long taken shape in the interdisciplinary work of urban ecology, yet on a building scale new methods are not yet clear. In light of shifts in ecological thinking, how can architecture develop to include the necessary insights, knowledge, concepts, and working methods? This symposium looks to further discussion about this changed culture of environment.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec - Album
GERMANY
03-Feb-12> 28-May-12 |

The brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec rank among the most influential contemporary designers. Their ideas are often inspired by shapes and structures of nature. The exhibition presents sketches and conceptual drawings of the Bouroullecs and draws attention towards the medium of drawing itself, which has kept its importance even in times of computer visualizations. This offers fascinating insights into the inspirations of the designers, but also in some preliminary stages of their final creations.

SuperBodies
BELGIUM
04-Feb-12> 27-May-12 |
 |
SuperBodies, the 3rd Hasselt triennial explores the fascination of many artists and designers for the way in which our body secretly moulds and shapes our experiences. This exhibition does not just re-present the body. It presents the body in all of its often half-conscious operations. A large, interactive ensemble of works from visual artists, choreographers and (fashion-) designers makes us see and feel the body as the source of our thoughts and emotions. Upcoming and internationally established artists and designers operate on the boundaries between disciplines to unravel the mysteries of the body. The whole of the city of Hasselt will qualify as a stage, but the main focus will be on larger venues such as the Cultural Center, the house for contemporary art Z33, the Fashion Museum, CIAP and the city Museum Het Stadsmus.

Design - Modern Art
GERMANY
14-Feb-12> 14-Feb-12 |
 |
By tradition, Italian designers dominate the furniture and lighting section. Aldo Tura and Ettore Sottsass earn special mentioning: If you feel like furnishing your whole living room with Tura pieces, a rare dining table with six chairs (Estimate € 2,500-3,500), a bar cabinet (Estimate 800-1,000) and a sideboard (Estimate € 1,500-1,800) can be purchased next to two other pieces of furniture. By contrast, the whole spectrum of Sottsass’ designs is being represented. Next to his classic ’Memphis’ ’Casablanca’ shelf, designed in 1981 (Estimate € 5,000-6,000), a range of his ceramics from the ’Yantra’ series (e. g. Y33b, 1968, Estimate € 800-900) and the ’Hollywood Collection’ from 1986 can be acquired, as well as two lots comprising three ’Hsing’ vases each, designed in 1972/73, where the white and green vases seem to be especially rare as only ten of each colour are said to have been produced (Estimate € 1,200-1,500).

The MAK Explores Its Future, in which the museum’s cultural memory was reviewed and the proposals developed by the MAK for the coming years were debated in a number of public discussion events. Curated by the MAK and in an exhibition design by Krüger & Pardeller, this working 3 presentation provides the museum and the public with an occasion for further information and comment.

EXHIBITION
Christophe Côme - Alchemies
UNITED STATES
17-Feb-12> 21-Apr-12 |
 |
Hedge is presenting the first San Francisco exhibition of work by Christophe Côme, a furniture and lighting designer based in Paris. Working primarily in cast iron and glass, Côme evokes the legacy of early modern design -particularly the work of Pierre Chareau, Jean Royère, and Frank Lloyd Wright - with objects that are unmistakably contemporary and exquisitely crafted. The exhibition includes a range of objects -including cabinets, folding screens, and lighting- that share a pared-down opulence. Precise iron forms, sometimes with enameled surfaces, carry a strong graphic element offset by the imperfection and optical complexity of handcrafted or patterned industrial glass. Côme’s works express balance as they juxtapose raw and refined materials and shapes, masterfully weaving elements into a graceful rapport.
