Luxury Textiles East and West
UNITED STATES
20-Feb-03> 30-Jan-05 |
 |
Luxury Textiles East and West: Dress and Identity continues the 50th anniversary celebration of LACMA's Costume and Textiles Department. The exhibition presents the critical role textiles have played in aesthetically defining social identity. Nothing defines a person's place in the social or political hierarchy more clearly than attire, color, material, technique, and imagery on the textiles of dress all play a critical part in establishing these distinctions. The exhibition includes a 16th-century, two-pile velvet Venetian senator's badge and a 19th-century Indonesian bride's gilded wedding skirt indicating her temporary elevation to 'royal' status during the marriage ceremonies. Although definitions of what constitutes luxury vary from culture to culture, common denominators are the use of costly materials, labor-intensive production methods, and controlled silks and velvets with gold thread as status symbols.

How would you spend £30,000 on "things you'd like to live with"? This was the challenge given to building designer and sculptor Thomas Heatherwick when he was asked to curate this year's Conran Foundation Collection. Heatherwick, whose projects include the design of a Buddhist temple in Japan and England's tallest sculpture in Manchester, responded by constructing a collection of nearly a thousand "ingenious inventions" from Japanese eyelid glue to a biodegradable papier mache coffin.

Pierre Paulin exhibition, Galleria Arnaud, Milano
ITALY
15-Jan-04> 31-Mar-04 |
 |
To inaugurate the new setting of the gallery in Via Ventura 5 in Milan, I decided to expose for the 1st time in Italy an impressive collection of rare pieces of French designer Pierre Paulin. Most famous for the pieces of furniture like the Mushroom chairs or the Orange Slice chairs that resulted from his long time collaboration with Dutch firm Artifort, Pierre Paulin's work embraced a vast array of modern designs that were rarely exposed to the public. I believe it was time to celebrate these rare and important realisations in an exhibition dedicated to his work.
Location: Galleria Arnaud, Via Ventura 5, Milano.

Hopping Fences
UNITED STATES
16-Jan-04> 02-May-04 |
 |
Hopping Fences is a multi-layered exhibition, conceived as an alternative to traditional furniture or design shows. Its site-specific nature presses the boundaries between art and design, personal expression and public statement. These installations will act as conceptual reflections on how design impacts, and is impacted by, modern urban living: the pace and demands, allowances and challenges. In addition, each installation will also connect to other expressive forms?those more intimate influences on these designers? work including sculpture, glass blowing, collage, painting, and video art.

Talking Quilts
UNITED STATES
11-Feb-04> 01-Aug-04 |
 |
"Talking Quilts" explores the visual textures of language as expressed through approximately twenty quilts made by women from the mid-nineteenth century through the present. This exhibition is the first to consider the aesthetic impact of words as they have been applied to quilts in letters that are fluid, childish, subtle, and bold. In each of these textiles, decisions of word choice, graphic strategy, and technique - embroidery, stencil, piecing, and appliquÈ - transform surfaces into monumental assertions of self-identity, statements of belief and support, and blankets of protective prayer.

February 14, 2004
The Moderna Museet Collection is one of the foremost in Europe. This new presentation, which is organised into three chronological sections, demonstrates the breadth of the Collection, which is firmly rooted in the 20th century. Zarina Bhimji and Tunga are two very recent acquisitions, but of course the presentation also includes famous works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Sigrid Hjertén and Robert Rauschenberg´s Monogram (The Goat). Rent an audioguide and enjoy the Collection at your own pace.

From the beaded necklaces of ancient Egyptians to the flashy, large-scale "bling bling" worn by Hip Hop stars and their fans, jewelry has always offered complex social and cultural meanings, both for the people who wear it and for those looking on. These complex meanings will be explored through over two hundred fabulous pieces of jewelry exhibited in Baubles, Bangles and Bling: The World of Jewelry. This groundbreaking exhibition is divided into three main sections: Life Passages, Status and Power, Spirituality and Belief, which adopts a cross-cultural perspective that reveals both the similarities of use as well as the diversity of artistic expression embodied in personal adornment.

San Francisco will be one of only two American venues for this extraordinary exhibition organized by the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Art Deco looks at the sources of inspiration and global impact of this popular style of the early 20th century. Standing between Modernism and Historicism, the search for a modern national style in the craft tradition provided a governing concern for designers of the Art Deco generation.

Just One Word: PLASTICS
UNITED STATES
06-Mar-04> 27-Feb-05 |
 |
Today, nothing underscores the technological revolution more than plastics. Not since the early 20th-century popularity of Bakelite (which will be featured in a simultaneous Institute installation as part of the ongoing "Case Studies" series) has plastic been so admired. Tutti-frutti colors, sensuous, tactile surfaces, transparent forms, and phenomenal tensile strength are but a few of the qualities fulfilling design needs beyond mere function. In the 21st century, functionality has become multi-dimensional and plastics appear to promise ever-growing purpose and pleasure.

Bakelite: Art through Chemistry
UNITED STATES
06-Mar-04> 27-Feb-05 |
 |
While plastic is considered a "now" medium, the modern plastics industry stretches back to the 1920s and the mass production of Bakelite. Its potential was first developed in 1907 by Dr. Leo Hendrik Baekeland (1863-1944) now regarded as the "Father of Plastics." This exhibit explores how Molten Bakelite flowed evenly and gave rise to the smooth, "streamline" style so pervasive in the l930s. At that time the ideological thrust of Modernism stressed the importance of new materials such as Bakelite and, in turn, plastics became firmly associated with the ideals and spread of modern design.

MIDCENTURY MODERN

MIDCENTURY MODERN is more than a fair. Struck by the confusion of decorative arts fairs where stock is piled high and crammed together and your senses are assaulted by every style imaginable, Showhome set about curating a new public event where mid-century and modern could be served together in easily digestible pieces. At MIDCENTURY MODERN dealers specialising in the best Modernist design sell next to young designers working today in the mediums of art, furniture, ceramics, glass and soft furnishings. Set inside the stunning glass, wood and concrete Christisson-designed sixties refectory at Dulwich College in South East London, it is the quality of the goods on offer, the personal touches and the camaraderie between dealers and designers that make for a real buzz of excitement.

Nagoya Design Do! 2004: Design a "Scent". Sense Design.
JAPAN
17-Mar-04> 03-Sep-04 |
 |
Design is synonymous with neither the function of a thing or product nor with its purpose. On the contrary, design is the scent that includes both. Design has already dispatched to people a particular scent. However, there are many designs that have ceased releasing their scents. And some that have gone astray, emitting a scent foreign to their true presence. Challenge yourself to create design that simmers with fresh scents, appealing to us, warning us, striking a chord among us.

Picture This: Windows on the American Home
29-Mar-04> 11-Aug-04 |
 |
Windows play a defining role in both the architecture and the culture of the American home. From cozy dormers to expansive picture windows to ornamental bays, windows are important elements in the creation of architectural styles. They also shape our perceptions of the world beyond our houses by framing outdoor views, while at the same time offering glimpses into the lives of inhabitants. Their two-way transparency ? allowing insiders to see out and outsiders to see in ? has turned windows into symbols of access in the world beyond the home. Throughout our nation's history, windows have opened a view into the changing nature of American domestic life.
