The BBB puts a lot of effort in mediating disputes between consumers and companies. Whether they are members or not, people will always be able to check the BBB website and see that a claim was filed and whether or not they made an effort to correct the situation. Many larger businesses check the BBB site to make sure they are spending their $$$ with reputable companies.
