Woody Allen movies are funny, old issues of National Lampoon are irreverent, George Bernard Shaw plays are witty. A commonplace piece of furniture juxtaposed with a luxe material (or, vice versa -- a rarefied piece upholstered with something low) just never does it for me, sorry to say. Do we call these things "witty" just to acknowledge that we "get" the intended joke? Seventy(+) years after Merit Oppenheim's fur tea cup, the joke's wearing thin, dontcha think?
