I believe the textured surface was chosen for durability, e.g. less prone to scratches, scratches appear less visible. I don't believe it was chosen to try to emulate the texture of fiberglass (since it is not even remotely close). The Vitra Panton polypropylene chair has the exact same finish. You can get the glossy version, but it will cost you $1400. And yes, scratches will show up just like the original!
