modernist fences
My builder dropped the ball and forgot to include our fence in our home price, so it looks like I will be building my own. I am considering something similar to this mistilite fence in front of this Eichler, only much shorter and with solar lights behind each panel.

However, it will be a few months so feel free to post photos of other period styles and/or good examples of what I am already considering. Thanks!

If classic form
is watching, he might be able to provide advice or a sample. . .

I'm sure you'll come up with a beauty -- detailed in wood as elegantly as Mies would have in metal ? He spend his life working on the connection between glass and steel. . .

If you are going the DIY route
...the only constraints would be your budget, environment, and skills.

What are your wishes/ constraints? Do you want full privacy, semi privacy, or something more open that would offer nice shadow-play? Do you have considerations like high winds or a climate that would exclude certain materials?

We do not have a fence. We actually really like the fact that more homes in our community than not are free of any fences or barriers. You are only required to have one if you have a pool. Though on one side of our house, we have neighbors who have a partial fence (their house was done by the same architect as ours and they have a pool). It's a semi-private fence made of wood slats and there is ivy that gives more privacy in the warm months. I like the translucent quality of the fence and it has a nice Asian influence (as does their house). It's a simple design and would be easy to replicate should we choose to enclose our yard.

What are your neighbors doing and what kind of barrier would suit you best?

SDR, Still haven't got ar...
SDR,

Still haven't got around to the screen/fence project. It's on the back-burner along with the house numbers that someone was so kind to design for us.

I searched threads at another forum that had "Lotta" information at one time regarding this topic but couldn't find much. I think it was a member called Egads that constructed a fence similar to the above image and showed plans on how he did it.

.
I do like the translucent panels but having spent a spring and summer in
Austin...that is some hot air! Our carport had a ceiling fan.
I would consider fixed lover panels? And maybe they could also have a center
pivot. I have a vintage fence book at another location.
This has been discussed on other forums with photo links but i just can't
locate any right now...

I love
wrought iron fences in decidedly midcentury patterns. I posted a thread on here once long ago (maybe 5 months ago?) with some patterns. I can post some more if you like that kind of look.

Sure that would be great! I used the search function to no avail...

lover panels? Sounds sexy.

I went to my local library and didn't find anything totally dedicated to fences .... what is the title of your book?

A google 'image' search
for 'modern fences' brings up many.
But hardly interesting or modern.
This one is ipe. Actually nice.

Second photo from google 'image' jalousie windows.
If at ground level and in wood instead of glass, and lowered
towards the bottom, it could be very private. I'm considering
'fixed' instead of operable. And a gradual opening toward the top.

Modernist fences
whitespike,

I saw an article years ago that indicated a person purchased shower door "seconds" at a very reasonable price and used these as panels on a fence. The plus side was not only a low cost, but the doors were designed to be very safe in accidents.

There are some interesting fences pictured in: The Garden Book by Phaiden.

My vote is for an architectural screen...
They don't have to be expensive. They can be done with cinder blocks.

We should get a better idea...
We should get a better idea the relationship between fence and home. Pictures?

My backyard neighbor is in the process of building a fence, much to my dismay (formulating a written letter to them). White, consider them above all else before proceeding. It's helpful to communicate with them and get feedback on your intentions. Nothing worse then living in a community of defensive animosity. A kind reminder, you live in a neighborhood, not a penitentiary.

I'm fond of wood fences.
The below image is a fence similar to the redwood fence my father designed & built around our swimming pool in the 1970's, though ours didn't have a horizontal middle brace-- just vertical slats.

Personally, I think I'd shy away from something as fully- enclosed as the translucent panels in the first pic-- too claustrophobic, no view, no breeze filtering through.

Wow

Norm, I don't do a Lotta stuff now -- all my time at WC -- where we have egads as an active poster. I'll wait for your fence with pleasant anticipation. Maybe it's time to rethink the numerals ? I posted the image somewhere recently -- here ?

E-mail me.

Rocky -- love that first fence. What's not to like ?

LOVE that perf metal image from uasrem2 -- and the next two slat samples too.

Thanks for posting photos!

Keep in mind the fence will only be 4 feet high. I don't plan on shutting my neighbors out!

I will try and find a suitable photo.

This is the best I can find right now. Pretty close to the street. And as you can tell, very close neighbors.

The first posting
whitespeak,

That house has great potential and I like the first and original posting (I would venture to guess the most expensive to construct) for the side and back* and I really like the DudeDah Concrete IIRC for the front of the home as a partial screen (relgardless of the fcat that I not seen the front). Both are very elegant.

*Should the back yard have enough depth a shrub similar to the Crataegus monogyna (Hawthorn, May, Quickthorn hedge) may be the answer to account for the greening effect of nature and allow the area to breath and support a minimum of wildlife.
