Bell Geddes Desk
as promised, here is a pic (picked it up yesterday)

This is a desk, not a vanity (no slots for a mirror). Has different, but original, pulls

I am GOING TO SELL THIS - question to the boards, what is this thing realistically worth? In very good (not mint) condition? I am thinking of including the Shaw Walker chair as it looks so darn RIGHT with it.

I don't like asking naked "what's it worth" questions but for this I am pretty much at a loss. It's a significant piece.

Shocked I found this at a local thrift store...

An Ox
A Modernica Ox chair in black fabric. I love the shape of the chair but there are some issues that bug me about it. For one, the fabric is this awful black velvety stuff that catches every bit of lint. Secondly - and admittedly it is a copy - there are small details off. The piping around the horns and around the armrests is shoddily done with hard bits of glue poking out.

In high-res photos of the Danish made versions the piping is seamless.

I'm keeping it for a while to see if it grows on me, but I may swap it out or have it recovered.

Arne Jacobsen Grand Prix chair
Just arrived! On first assembly the legs look a little funky - any thoughts? There is a triangular bolt arrangement that I'm pretty sure you can't put together incorrectly, but it wouldn't be the first time I'd made that mistake.

Also, any ideas as to the wood veneer? I'm thinking teak but am pretty bad at identifying wood species. Larger pic in the link.

It's been on my wishlist for a while. I got it for just under $700 shipped, which I considered decent enough although I'm not too up to date on prices for such things. I hadn't seen any in a long while, and now there have been three on eBay in the last few weeks.

And the more I look at the legs, the more I think they're just fine.

Killian - Yes, it is my understanding also that Prip designed the coffee/tea set to compliment the flatware. In fact, Reed & Barton apparently had a hand in the design of the flatware, as well -- the initial design was Ponti's, but they made some modifications to it, from what I've read. I would love to see Ponti's original sketches. I have looked online but haven't been able to find anything.

Re: Ox
It wasn't re-upholstered in a bad way - just done poorly the first time around. As always with Modernica, the quality is as dependable as the weather.

I would love to own a real Ox. Even in pictures I can see the quality is better. But in the meantime this one is the placeholder...or until the next best thing comes along. While it's not nearly as cushy as the Eames it IS nice to be able to flop into the chair without worrying.

My camera died suddenly last week so I'll need to wait to post pictures.

Rideout kettle 1936 from Wagner, Ohio
A great example of streamlining: The industrial designers of the '30s took the idea of streamlining and applied it to everyday things, even things that weren't supposed to move at all! Cosmetic changes of familiar objects stimulated consumer desire and people ended up buying things, even in the depths of the Great Depression.

She smelled really awful as a old lady (estate sale smell). I am still cleaning it but isn't she lovely!

And places like Salvation army or Savers wouldn't even mark that at 80...those would sell for about 85 a piece in a thrift shop.

The best thing I have ever gotten on CL was my 670/671 but I could see how someone could mistaken that for a crappy old chair.

One man's junk cliché
This is all OT in this thread I guess, but what is so unbelievable about someone giving away an ESU (or selling for $40)?

There is a tonne of stuff out there (not just modern furniture) that looks like junk (or at least nothing of value) to 99.9% of us. It just depends what collector markets you're into. The use-value of stuff on the collector market is almost always miniscule compared to the exchange-value.

Let's congratulate each other on neat finds rather than question the legitimacy of claims. It is rare that I find something even mediocre in my area so I enjoy living vicariously through others in more well-endowed locales :)

No, not made up as much as you would love to believe. Will take some pics specifically for you and post them.....not to worry. Not sure why you feel the need to insult people who you don't even know. Took the pics down as you felt they may be images I found on the net........ will post them as soon as I can. I still can not understand what you think I would have to gain by posting a find?

All I am is a guy who enjoys collecting.........sorry, did I ask for recognition and a medal?

Adam, cool sofa, I have the chair. For a knockdown piece they are absolutely rock solid.

As for the other comments on here...I think someone is owed an apology and the less anonymous the forum is the better. Even though it doesn't make a huge differnce I like knowing a bit about Whitespike and where Olive lives etc. It makes for richer discussions when you can refer to especially relevant things or ask advice about an area.

Why don't people use their real names online? I've never really understood it.

True or not (and I suspect it is) I salute all who search for that elusive next score!

Not trying to pick a fight...
Not trying to pick a fight here, jdip -- I don't doubt your word and I congratulate you on your incredible score. But I don't understand why you'd post pics and tell us a tiny bit of information, and then ignore any requests for more background, which are obviously going to follow when you tell us about such a great find. (And the only person you respond to is the one who doubts the veracity of your claim). You say you're just a guy who enjoys collecting. I would think another collector would happily share the details of this find, and understand why many of us are interested. But if your only motivation in posting about the ESUs is to gloat about your great luck, well, mission accomplished, we're all terribly jealous. I personally don't want to hear any more about it, though.

George Nakashima Chair...
BJ, I quickly sold the chair but here is a pic of the same chair.
Seeing this at Goodwill for 8 bucks made my heart jump a little.

I have still have 2 to touch up
then I will be selling these.

which brings up a question

Other than eBay and Craigslist, where else could I list these? I mean, these are rather high end items! eBay works, but it is a bit skeevy at times.

a couple of lamps
I just got two of these lamps marked Italy, probably Raymor. They weren't cheap but they were not nearly as pricey as the one on 1stDibs right now, so ha! I LOVE THEM. Now I get to find just the right shades for them.

They're about 18" high and have four very rounded sides.

A little Lax
Went for a long walk to blow off some steam and some pizza eating fat, learning baking does have its downsides...someone else was in the shop looking for good stuff but I nabbed this before them, there was also a nice set of Rosti bowls but I have enough of them and the rubber was perishing on them. $18.00 not too bad. Kangaroo, veges and red wine casserole (with pastry) for dinner. Gonna teach myself how to make Danish pastries, first I have to reduce my apricots in syrup, cooking is so much fun! I never knew, and cheap, my shopping list reads like a ration book, amazing what you can do with cheap stuff and the basics.

The smell of apricots, boiling sugar and lemon juice...why wasn't I told?

No Picture Zone
OK, was at a thrift store today and saw an interesting chair. I will take pictures tomorrow, but does the following SOUND Danish or no?

Tall ladderback chair in oak. The seat strapping is that Threaded wire (looks almost like a stove's heating elements). Did anyone OTHER than the danish do that? Unmarked, of course. I will take pics on Monday. If it is danish it's older. Somewhat Craftsmen in style.

I know, I feel like an idiot even as I type this.

but, to make amends
I am about to go buy 6 Brno chairs for $150. HIDEOUSLY upholstered, but that won't be my problem...

PICS ADDED

Strapping looks original. Obviously re-upholstered. I see Grey Vinyl underneath.

I am sure they are not original, but the strapping looks vintage. I know others have made versions of the same basic chair.

Attribution may be tough!

Still, $150 for 6 works for me.

With some good leather or fabric they will be fine chairs, I don't think though that they are quite as pleasing as the knoll chair, the tube should have a slight 'intuitive' curve at the front leg. I read somewhere that Mies considered a straight line but decided against it in the end.

Anyway, I prefer these to the flat bar version which is ridiculously heavy.

yes
I have seen this exact chair attributed to Knoll, but that does not seem to be right to me. They are Vintage judging by the tubing and the strapping. Wish to heck they were marked somehow (will keep searching).

I think
thonet made a ver as well?

the following are attributed to thonet and are evil twins of they one's I have (minus the mardi gras upholstery, of course)

According to this book (see link) Thonet only produced the models 533 and 534 until 1936, there were a couple of other models but I doubt your chairs are from this period, its chairs in the time of Hitler.

The screwed butt join at the back of the sled is an older detail from what I know though..who knows? Good luck.

agreed
I think the link was mis-attributed as well. Shocking, I know

Well, these are vintage, but not Knoll, Thonet, or original.

They have no curve or LEAN, so they are somewhat less elegant.

But they are VERY well made. Solid as heck, not some cheap contemporary take on the chair. And the original strapping is 60's at the latest.

so I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help, though. To me, this is part of the fun...

Or check this ebay item id 390103401684

I think that is my chair. Straight front legs. Cushions look the same. Has a tag (pictured below) that says THONET.

I have that table too!
I have the same coffee table...It was my mom's from the 1960's. It also has a "plastic" tray that fits into that hole in the middle of the base. I filled the tray with dirt and have pothos growing in it. My mom also had a mirror custom cut for that tray and used to put knick knacks on it. I'd like to post my pictures but I don't know how...I only subscribed just now so I could respond to your post.
