DO YOU REALLY NEED IT ?
I am compiling a top 50 list of things, items, objects, architecture, graphic design or anything considered design in our contemporary society that has no or poor bearing, significance, meaning to you. Please indulge this thread and lets see what comes out of it......
I personally have a problem with phonecards that only last for 60 days. When I go to London for example, knowing that I have some un-used minutes when I leave the country gives me a particual kind of angst that only badly designed objects or ideas can give. Who is benefitting from my non-communicado? Should I be forced to call someone to small-talk just to avoid the feeling of being ripped off?

ANGST
I would say most tightly time limited things are obviously NOT GOOD,its a COMMON ploy in advertising. Also who needs people who wish to kill any VERVE they come across, there are people who wish to pull the wings off "butterflies" and leave the forum with BUGS.

Outdated & Poor Design
How about the Electoral College? That hasn't made sense ever since illiteracy was essentially wiped out (to a certain degree) in America.
Oh, and the typeface "Hobo." It's just bad.

Bugs do read Derrida also..betty
No need to get all huffy-puffy about the question Betty, If you don't discuss what is bad design, how are you ever going to figure out what good design is. Stating that "pulling the wings of butterflies" is just plain silly, in which I would agree with you, I prefer bad design over bad responses.
Have you every read Derrida and deconstruction? Just a thought.....

packaging
Hate the stuff. Cable ties, plastic shrink wrapping, styrofoam and little cardboard props to hold the products at an aesthetic angle in the plastic windowed box. Then warning stickers on everything. All this crap takes forever to remove and is a total waste. I think most industrial packaging designers have never tried to unpack these horrors that they create. Give it to me in a paper bag, preferably recycled, please. Bluezipper, you may hate IKEA, but at least they keep the packaging miasma to a minimum.

Where do I start?
Right, bad design, low significance. Come to England - it's everywhere.
The winner has to be...
Two taps (faucets) - a hot and a cold one - instead of one mixer. This is a victorian folly that speaks reams about how conservative and myopic this place can be. To wash your hands you either have to fill an hygienic sink with water or play 'hand tennis' from freezing to boiling. Evil and everywhere.

I think the idea generated...
I think the idea generated because of humans being bisymetric.Most/MANY designers create (bad) confusion and complexity .England is important in an early industrial sense.

...oh betty..here we go again...
I don't know if you have a penchant for play on words or if you haven't done your your spellcheck lately.
Your reply does open up for a very different kind angle on the discussion though, which I don't mind developing at all, for the sake of conversation....
Yukio MISHIMA did write "Confessions of a mask", but was he a MIASMA ?
Perhaps he thought Japan and the world so badly designed that he didn't mind committing seppuku (ritual disembowelment)
The story goes that his cadet(lover) Morita also tried to commit seppuku, but the sword was too blunt and the whole thing ended up, quite a messy affair. Well, talking of badly designed objects in critical situations.......
