Robin and Lucienne Day
I can imagine it is difficult getting Day stuff in the US. I have seen a few Robin Day items on ebay.co.uk in the last few weeks (hillestack chair, some lovely cabinets) and there is usually some Lucienne Day fabrics up there as well.

Its perplexing, there seems to be litte to no interest in specific designers on the forum outside of the very well known, well worn few mies/eames/nelson...etc.I think we run the risk of being a online interiors advice rap, thats fine but it is a/the major focus.

Educate me...
I don't know anything about the Days. Can someone point me to a book or on-line reference? Thx. B, there was a thread earlier that sked about cesigners that folks like. Unfortunately it was rather short-lived. I'd love to resurrect it, do you have any input to offer?

Dear Olive
There is so much to be said about Robin and Lucienne Day that you really have to buy the book! As most good design books it is packed with images but the text is written by Lesley Jackson and I would be surprised if you would not be able to find it on Amazon. Although she was at least as important as her husband Robin, I know less about Lucienne Day (Conradi) other than that she designed exceptional modern fabrics. Robin Day (1915) is somewhat younger than Charles Eames (1907) but as Azurechicken pointed out, they had a rather similar career. Both choose to work mostly in furniture, but did graphics, interiors and occasionally architecture. Both had a long term relationship with few manufacturers, Knoll and Herman Miller for Eames, Hill for Robin Day. They both won the MOMA competition for low cost furniture in 1949. In the early 50ties, Robin Day was certainly the most visible product designer in Britain and one of the leading figures in the famous Festival of Britain. He is certainly one of the ones that shaped British design in the 20th century. Of his chair for Hill with an injection moulded polypropylene seat , more than 14 million were sold, but he won the gold medal of the Milan Trienale for his Festival of Britain pavilion.

Robin Day
Have you got Habitat in the USA? They have a Robin Day sofa which is pretty reasonable.
Anyone interested in his massively successful polyprop chairs can probably get them over here for a sixpence. They're the standard chair for schools and village halls. You regularly see them on skips. Easy to find.

I'm off to Amazon right now! JakeyG, sorry no Habitat here. Oh well, at least they've finally opened an IKEA nearby (in Connecticut) so at least I can get decent lamps, etc.

Habitat
No I dont believe we have one in the states. I have seen the site before and while I love the forum sofa and polyprops they haven't, to my knowledge, reissued my favorite designs of his.
I lean toward his wood designs such as the 'Hillestack' stacking plywood chairs, The Royal Festival Hall Lounge chair (my favorite), and the 'reclining chair.'
He also had many wonderful case good designs.

For copyright reasons
Habitat's name in the U.S. is Conran's. There are at least two in N.Y. that I know of. As mentioned on another thread, Habitat is now owned by IKEA.

Great name, you're right. Ah, 1951. You should see the chairs they now have at Royal Festival Hall... not a patch on Robin's efforts...

Other British designers of 40s-60s
I love the Day's furniture and was wondering what other British Furniture designers were around at the same time...
John and Sylvia Reid did some lovely cabinets/dining sets and Earnest Race designed the Antelope chair. Does anyone know of any other British designers who were producing interesting items at that time?

Thanks, Pete1979. It's very tempting to buy some of these fabrics, they're really beautiful, however I only collect vintage fabrics by mainly Verner Panton. I would love to have Lucienne Day represented in my collection.

Robin Day products and Habitat
The Container Store sells (or at least has sold) Robin Day's Polo chair; I saw one in the Chicago branch of The Container Store two weeks ago, with a wheeled base. I seem to remember it was $199.
Also, just to clear up confusion regarding Conran's and Habitat; in the UK there is a large chain called Habitat that was founded by Terence Conran. He then started a higher-end stand-alone store called The Conran Shop (interestingly, the first Conran Shop was on the site of what used to be the first Habitat Shop on Fulham Road- but I digress..).
When Habitat decided to move in to the US market in the 1970s, it found that someone else owned the rights to the name over there; they therefore re-branded themselves Conran's. Over its lifetime in the US, the chain slowly re-branded itself as Conran's/Habitat, but the seeds of confusion had already been sown. (I worked at a Boston branch of Conran's/Habitat and later worked in The Conran Shop on Fulham Road in the UK; there, perplexed US tourists would wander in and wonder why the merchandise on display was so much more expensive and unusual than that in Conran's. We pointed them towards a nearby branch of Habitat, where the merchandise *was* broadly similar).
Conran's/Habitat threw in the towel in the US in the early 90s, not long after Terence Conran had relinquished his interests in the chain he founded in the UK. Instead, he retained control of his higher-end Conran Shop in the UK (then just a single store) and slowly expanded it into Germany, Japan, Australia and the US.
All of which is a long-winded way of saying that the Conran's that Koen mentions in New York (there's actually just one) is *not* a Habitat store and will not carry Habitat merchandise; unfortunately this includes the Robin Day sofa. Instead it's actually a branch of The Conran Shop, i.e. selling high-end merchandise.
Habitat, incidentally, after a few directionless years in the 90s, is once again an extremely interesting retailer (having Tom Dixon as a creative director has helped, I feel).
