Brass candleholder from what era?
Hi All,

Picked up this brass candleholder in Berlin. It's shape pulled my attention so i bought it. Looking at it i'm wondering if from what era is is...? Anyone seen one before or has info?

Bye Pat

Thanks for the info! First i saw some artistic shape in it from the 50/60/70ies (mainly due the rougness of the brass) But then also recognised the 'jugenstil' kinda lines... but then an other question:

Is it common if its from the mention era's that the space for the candle is drilled? or would it be casted? This size is 17,5mm.

sorry the pics are iphone... and a bit small... The candeholder is solid brass & 16 cm high.

The casting appears a bit rough
in the closeup photo, though this may have been intentional.

Is there evidence of any machining or finishing such as mold flash having been filed off or the bottom levelled? No benchmarks or foundry marks at all?

Your candlestick displays a timeless naturalistic form and nice proportions. I like it, but it could be either something special or a crude repro. Hard to tell.

Also, the metallurgy could offer a clue. If it is bronze, it is likely European and has some age. If it is brass, all bets are off.

No markings, no traces of machining whatsoever besides the 'drilled' hole. The surface looks hammered maybe this finishing is also used to get rid of any casting spots. I assume its european since bought in Berlin Germany.

I would say brass (dark brownish corrosion)

Also got a responce from a well known Dutch expert: He said Jugenstil inspired.

If it's something or not... I like it very much :)
