Bad news: rusty legs, and the previous owner made some unauthorized "mods" to the top.

Good news: the rust cleans up pretty well (I cleaned the set on the left), and a local shop made me a new walnut top. Picking it up tomorrow.

I think I did well.
I was on craigslist and picked up one item, and then when I got to the house the couple said they had more...The husband had been stationed in Germany and then they went to Denmark 48 years ago and bought all their furniture. Everything was very nice.

They said they had some tables in a pile in the celler and were selling them in addition to the original item I went to pick up.

100 bucks for all three. I grabbed them. They need some love in terms of the top finish, but structurally are nick and dent free.

I was thinking they are actually
Kindt-Larssen?

I have a question regarding refinishing on these Kindt-Larssen.
Obviously these are beautiful as is, but there is quite a bit of water ring damage and overall finish issues. No dings or wood damage, but, do you think it is worth getting these professionally refinished?

I never do this with an Eames or other pieces, but sometimes feel Danish modern items seem to be accepted more with a proper refinishing.

Thoughts? Sorry not trying to turn the thread into a refinishing topic, just curious about these in particular. Refinishing is generally something I avoid, but these seem to really need some love.

Dark water rings and stains l...
Dark water rings and stains like the ones on your tables are caused by the iron that is naturally present in water, and how it reacts with the tannins in the wood. It is a kind of rust stain, basically, and there are very effective means of removing these kinds of stains using chemicals, rather than sanding. Sanding can work, but sometimes these stains go down quite deep into the wood, and as you can see the tops of these tables are pretty thin.

If you Google this issue, you will find that oxalic acid is the most common thing used to remove dark ring stains on wood furniture. I know that nicer woodworking and hardware stores here in the USA carry it.

There is a kitchen cleanser here in the USA called "Barkeeper's Friend", which contains some oxalic acid. When I have got a dark ring stain on my teak dining table or my walnut cutting board, I make a paste from the cleanser, and put it on the stain, and so far I have not encountered one that did not disappear completely, and some have been pretty dark. So far I have not seen it negatively effect the natural color of the wood itself.

I like boomerangs
Does anyone have designer or maker info for the rocking chair (the Erik Christensen dining chair is fairly well documented)?

I had seen the rocking chair a few times previously and finally decided to go after this one. I have seen Pearsall references, but do not believe that is correct; considering a dealer in Chicago recently shipped one over from Denmark. The curves don't seem in the Pearsall style either.

The cyan upholstery on both pieces is coincidental as they came from different places. My reupholstering selection for them will be a little more subtle.

I know there are a variety of remedies cited for removing white rings (rubbing with mayonaisse, etc.), but what has worked best for me is a clothes iron, with no steam (and preferably no water in the iron), on a relatively high heat setting, with a folded cloth between the iron and table top. The last teak dining table I got had very prominent white rings, and I was lucky enough to have them all disappear completely after using the iron.

I believe the 4 ducks logo is the older / oldest marking for the flatware. I was lucky enough to find a 35+ piece set of the Fjord at a garage sale last year for $8. They didn't have the ducks logo but said instead Dansk designs Germany JHQ . I assume they must be newer than yours.

The lovely older couple having the garage sale would have none of me shoving another $25 at them. I think my enthusiasm amused them...I then proceeded to weep openly, throw my arms around them both, and then on the way home I forgot who I was for 30 minutes.

I did go back however the next day and dropped a card with a long, ramble-y thank you and $25 in their mailbox :-)

I use mine often and enjoy the memory of how I got them, and meeting that lovely older couple, just as much as I enjoy using them...

my repro
i think mine might be a repro, as there appear to be some differences between mine and yours.

1. the ring at the top and bottom, to which you can attach extenders, is narrower in width than the rings for the glass holders. in my case, they are also more rounded, whereas the holder rings are flattened. from what i can see in your pictures, the widths appear to be the same.

2. the glass holders are also quite different. rather than the bubbles/ pebbled-like surface in ones i've seen online, my holder are clear glass above, with parallel etched lines below.

that said, the age is appropriate. i found them in the trash at a home at which i purchased a sven ellekaer coffee table. the woman said that her mom had brought both over when she emigrated to the u.s., and that she had grown up with both pieces. the coffee table had had its glass surface replaced, due to damage in an earthquake (in san fran), so maybe the holders were damaged and replaced too?

I was never able to find any repo's. I figured if there was such a thing I would have been able to find an irate posting, etc. somewhere. Nope.

What I do find inconsistent are those glass inserts. All of the versions I have seen have had inserts that look like mine.

The iron work, though, looks spot on to me mostly. I think it passes the squinted eye test.

There does seem to be some variability on these. I'd keep looking and I'd stay cautiously optimistic.

Waffle-I didn't mean to...
Waffle-I didn't mean to suggest that yours or anybody else's were repros or fakes. I just suspect that the Hoglund attribution is incorrect.

A while back I asked on here something about a different candelabra that I own, also iron and glass, which is marked Ystad Metall. That piece is commonly attributed to Hoglund, and I just assumed it was Hoglund, but someone on here from Sweden told me that it was an incorrect attribution and that the piece was by Gunnar Ander. And stylistically, it made perfect sense (just doesn't look like Hoglund's work), on top of the fact that Hoglund is associated with Boda/Axel Stromberg, and this piece was from Ystad.

That got me thinking about the chandelier, which is always attributed to Hoglund. But it doesn't look mucj like his other chandeliers, and also if it were Hoglund you'd think it would be made by Boda/Axel Stromberg, but it wasn't (mine was still labeled when I got it), so I just suspect it's a misattribution. But I don't know for sure about any of this..I'm .just guessing!

Gene, I was the one replying to your thread about Högström/Ander.

This piece I'm not sure about, although the design is very familiar to me. I don't think it's Höglund, but I'm not an expert. It just doesn't strike me as very typical of his style. My guess is that it was produced in the late 70 - mid 80's. The producer Bo-Ström or possibly Bo Ström (could both be a first and a surname or just a surname when combined), is unknown to me and I've only been able to find a few more designs from this company, none being as nice as this chandelier.

btw, the sticker says that the metal has been covered in some kind of coating and should not be polished.

Gene, you might very well be right about the date, I'm just guessing.

My guess is based partly on the type of environment where I think I've seen this before. I was born in the early 1970's and have seen it several times. I can't remember exactly where, but it most probably was in the house of some friend's parents.

The lines of the chandelier is also cleaner compared to the more "rustic modern" style I would normally associate with Höglund and other makers of wrought iron 1960-1970's in Sweden. This is why I think it might be later, but that is just a hunch.

This chair varies a little from the ones I see commonly for sale.

- It has 6, rather than 7, spindles
- Different webbing
- No exposed screws, etc.
- The top rail is narrower as it joins the back.

I got some of the info from this eBay listing
