C.F.A?
I picked up a 'Eames' lounge chair today for a six pack of beer and a chocolate bar. Its marked "C.F.A Canada" on the chair, its the same faded color as the link attached, but where the head rest attaches its wood instead of metal, and has a little 'tailbone' that attaches the mid piece to the base. Does anyone have any info on the company or this particular chair?

Great Jim!
These legs always remind me a bit of the Willy Van Der Meeren cabinets.
You've got a great collection going on there..

Just back from a vacation in France, we went down left of paris, to Nantes, Bordeaux, the Atlantique, made a large turn and went up the right side of Paris.
While there in the Berry region we passed a barn filled with 'brocante'. All good stuff, but a bit tatty (is that the word?) and exept some art deco ceramics all from well before 1900's.
Still I was able to find a pristine holmegaard klukkluk bottle in a subtile smokey grey, I paid 8 euro.
It was unmarked and when in a neighbouring village I saw in a shop a second example but in clear glass I began to doubt the brand or make..But back home I could easily confirm.
(the other one was priced way higher, both were unidentified).

Thanks B.J. but
I don't know if this buy was in the true sense of the "D.A"
rules...In a "D.A." world I would of walked passed an old man cutting his yellowing overgrown toenails in his front garden..his dirty feet firmly on the Reid cabinet and heard the lady of the house shout out of the window "the man wants $50 to take that cabinet to the dump"...then I would reply...
"Sir, I'll take it to the dump right now for $30"
"but the white van man will also empty the garage for us...we have a thousand old glass fiber Herman Miller stools in there" he replied while a piece of toenail flew past my eye..then I woke up...
I bought it from radar..."Chrome & Cream." I just wanted this piece so much..monday evening I said "yes o.k." via a mail to Bristol U.K.and wednesday evening it was delivered to Holland..brilliant buy and a brilliant service..

Pierre Cardin Cocktail Table

I picked this up about 3 months ago or so, but I didn't do restoration on it due to the effort involved in it...then finally gave in two weeks ago and did the hard yards, though I couldn't do it all myself.

It looks the goods now, though it is a piece that looks larger in person than what you may think a 4' x 4' table is.

The restoration cost a great deal more than what we paid for it, that's for sure.

A before shot

Hello Claus,

Here are a few pics before the restoration. Not the bets photos unless you can view the full-size versions to get close-ups.

The differences are really in the base having the chips corrected, and the side trim being polished to remove the scratches - as with the ice bucket. There were also corner brackets that were previously upon the corners to prevent damage by the previous owner that were removed, too - they were not original.

I saw one table like this at an auction in Florida and I had some close-ups taken of the table - the damage can be hidden by photography and it was really in quite poor shape - but still a lovely table.

The top had the scratches removed - fortunately the top was made from a solid color 1/8th inch laminate with makes correction possible.

The combined length of all the aluminum was near 55 or so feet, so it took a great deal of time - and I had to get someone who knew aluminum also.

I had several credenzas along with other items that I have personally restored, and this piece took the longest time of any to do so - but the result is pretty spectacular.

How does one tell?
The woman I got it from had it for over fifty years. It has some serious wear to the paint job but still works. I have a feeling it might be the real deal. All the hardware is consistent with the earlier models of the lamp. I'm not sure how early on people were doing knock offs though. Either way, it's still pretty cool.

10-Sep-12
I agree - It is a cool lamp.
Easiest way to tell that it's a replica is to look at the way the shade is mounted. On the original lamps, the frame tube terminates in a "T" into which the shade's ball-joint is fitted.

Photos, top to bottom:

One of the original lamps that sold at Wright a few months ago for $13K.

Thanks!!! I'm super stoked about the find!
I was pretty sure it was real and very early. I got it from a sweet old lady who was the original owner. She had all those Tuttle stools and a set of 4 Eames wire chair rockers. She wasn't ready to let go of those! But she was definitely a collector from the era. It seems that the T joint was a later addition to the Grossman lamp. The hardware on mine is just like what was on the one that was in Greta Grossman's home for a promotional photo shoot in 1948. I would be surprised if she had a knock-off in her own home! Some of these earlier examples of the lamp have sold at Wright and been featured in reputable shows.

Noah
You and alexandersforum are correct. There are different generations and different manufacturers of the grasshopper lamp and I believe yours is authentic.

Here is a detail of the pair you linked to. The neck/ head transition is the same as yours.

There are a number of details that vary among the different generations and makers of the grasshopper lamp. I have seen many of these in person, inspected them closely, compared and contrasted them and I've yet to sort it all out. I would be interested in seeing more detailed shots of your lamp. Besides the neck/ head juncture, I'd be curious to see the head (number and placement of holes) the feet (with a measurement of the diameter) and overall measurements.

The one thing I do know is that the knock-offs or copies have very significant differences in the design and construction and after looking at many of these I can tell you that they are pretty easy to spot.

Well, ok.
I'm certain that Pegboard has seen more of these lamps than I have, so I'll defer to his more-expert opinion. Noah, I apologize for making that snap judgment; I hope I didn't cause you any distress.

I've seen a number of Grasshoppers, and the only non-"T" authentic lamps I've ever seen have a swivel that looks like the one in the photo below, which was also used in at least one of Grossman's other lamp designs.

I've never seen a real Grasshopper with a swivel that looks like Noah's, but I'd love to learn more. Pegboard (or anyone else), do you have photos of another authenticated example with a swivel like the one on Noah's lamp?

hello.
The lamp's feet are roughly 1 inch and 5 8ths in diameter. The lamp is a little over 4 feet and 1 inch tall. The shade is about 9 inches long. fastfwd, the joint looks like the ones that pegboard posted above. The one you just posted looks like the real lamp but possibly with an altered joint.

Yesterday
I picked up this delightful two-sided earthenware ceramic vase by Tuscon artist Maurice Grossman. I love the whimsy, the Italian qualities, and the nod to Picasso.

Your images did not load when I first opened the thread.

Those Aarnio pieces are insane! I've not seen them before. Very cool!

Pegboard, I'd have never...
Pegboard, I'd never seen them before either and have been unable to find them anywhere else on the web....Odd that these pieces have slipped through the cracks over the years.

I got these awhile back
but I don't think I've posted about the cat thing before. It's one of a kind, home made of wood and is two sided. I bought it at an auction on behalf of my daughter. I'd called her there to look at a couple of Brno-type chairs and she said, "eh--but what about this?" and pointed to this thing, which I had not really noticed. It looks like a gate of some sort but I can't remember if there is any indication that there were hinges on it. Googling "Kat's Whisker" doesn't bring up anything other than some place in the UK. (Note that it's one whisker. Not multiple whiskers.) It's kind of weather so may have been an outdoor thing but maybe was just stored in a barn for a long time, we don't know. We don't know anything about it. Any ideas?

The other is my giant crewel piece which I think I've shown here before but it's in a new spot where I can finally get a full on photo (sorry for the graininess--dim lighting). It was designed by Erica Wilson, wife of Vladimir Kagan. She did a lot of traditional stuff but also some things like this that look great in a warm Danish mod environment. My daughter also recently got the same thing in a slightly less huge size on Ebay. Mine was only $2 at auction!

finally, a dining table shade
I have been looking for a long long time. Think I finally scored something that will look right.

What is the correct term for these babies? Plastic DIY? Folded shades?

It's vintage judging by the works.

I checked this thread to see the newest replies and as I scrolled down I saw your post with this photo. I don't know how I missed it before, but that outfit is too much! I love it. You look like an orange creamsicle!

Pique assiette table
Mosaic with broken plates.

Happened to be there yesterday when they brought this out on the floor in one of LA's more bottom-feeder thrift shops.

Two chairs came with it, familiar Victorian garden style, heavy (at least 70 lbs each)floral patterned iron painted white, with a little rust but not very old, not original to the table.
