On a budget.
Hey I'm young and on a budget, but I love modern seating. Can anyone tell me some chairs and/or sofas that are gonna be affordable ie: under about 400 yet still designer. So I can start looking.

That's a very difficult question to answer
It's like asking which book to buy.
I would look around places like auctions, eBay, Craigslist, flea markets etc. until you find something you fall in love with. Looking for specific items by specific designers can often mean that you miss out on the real treasures
Happy hunting

Perhaps
a pre-loved Eames LCW to compliment your sweet Eames aluminum group chair? Or an Eames time life stool? Or a Saarinen tulip side table?
Just a thought.

A lot of good stuff can be found
at great prices IF you are diligent and patient. There are already tons of tips in the "The last thing you acquired" threads (16 of 'em and counting!) on this board.
But you need to also develop an idea of the style that you like. To just say "designer seating under $400" is very broad.
On the other hand, if you are thinking that you want brand new pieces that retail for under $400---good luck!

You can get
Eames shell chairs all day for 100-150 USD. Look at Eames arm chairs (upholstered) or Bertoia wire chairs. Russell Woodard patio chairs are still well under 300 USD. Plia chairs, Louis Ghost by Panton, etc. Lots of choices for individual chairs under 400 USD. Upholstered lounge chairs are a different story altogether.
Chairs are easy, my friend. Wait until you get to beds.

still talking about beds
Riki,
You and I have the same dilemma with beds.
What ever became of your search for the Gae Aulenti, Tour table for Fontana Arte? Did you meet with success?

thrift stores and yard sales
most of what I have came from these 2 sources. But do some research and try to put together a punch list of what you are interested in. There's a whole lot of diversity out there, much of which doesn't look all that good in the same room.

"Modern" is pretty broad, yes.
There's Danish teak, there's Eames stuff in bright colors, there's chunkier stuff, there's McCobb, Dunbar, etc., etc. Some of it looks good together but a lot doesn't, as Waffle said. Part of a good design is putting individual pieces together to form a pleasing, interesting whole.
I love a lot of it myself but chose to go with mostly Danish teak. I just admire the rest from afar.

look on eBay and 1stDibs to...
look on eBay and 1stDibs to find stuff you like, then do searches on craigslist a few times a day with filters like "Danish" "teak" or "mid century". Plenty of effort with limited results, but saves you the physical hassle of running around to yard and garage sales all over the place.

Niceguy,
I found a nice Knoll marble top table instead to go with the Gae Aulenti chairs and a Rolf Benz sofa. Oh, and the laughing goat heads.

Hey,
There are many store that sell chairs for under $400. Try going to your local stores in your hometown. You can also try shopping online.

Beautiful room Riki!
Look like black porcelain?
I have similar, smaller tiles in my bathroom.

Aren't they wasps, appropriat...
Aren't they wasps, appropriate if I may presume )
Perhaps come up with a list of what you really like and concentrate on that. If I had my collecting time over it'd be pretty short with aluminium group chairs, a plain sofa, marble slab table and desk, tolomeo reading lamp (red) and the rest mostly built in cabinetry. Keeping it short and simple will save you more money in the long run if you're on a budget.

oh Mark, dear dear Mark....why not? is a question that is surely slumbering deep at the bottom of that glorious bay! Your appearance, no less glorious, generally portends the end of a thread, one aspect of DA that I look forward to immensely.

Robert,
it is simply Italian ceramic tile. The color is called anthracite. Very appropriate in a thread about doing things on a budget.
Mark, love the pants. Do they come in a snappy handbag, do you know?

Dearest Poodlechunks,
My goodness.
Heath, you're probably correct...Mother is such a wasp that she won't even pee in the shower.
Shipwright, You are simply too kind, but I must start drinking less vodka... and learn not to hi-jack threads with my sartorial non-sense.
Riki, I shall inquire with my lovely neighbor Lilly Pulitzer regarding a bee bag.
Fondly,
