Design Classic?
What gives an item of furniture the right to be labelled a design classic.

Ubiquity?
I'm only being partly sarcastic. Profusion does seem to confer the mantle of 'classic'.

There is no
formal designation of "classic" -- there exists no single person or institution to confer such honor. Rather, those designs which have stood the test of time, continuing decades after their inception to earn praise (and the "ultimate honor," continued sales and use in significant numbers), as well as repeated mention in the literature of the field, would indicate that a piece has reach the status of "classic."

Another meaning of the term is its inference that the design in question reflects the formal restraint and timeless dignity of the prototypes of "classicism," the Greek icons of architecture, of which the collonaded temples found on the Acropolis at Athens, and elswhere in the region, are the primary examples. In this sense, the architecture of Mies van der Rohe, Edward Durrell Stone and Philip Johnson can be called "classic."

Cannot agree more. What first...
Cannot agree more. What first struck me about classics, and subsequently led me to be interested in design, were those pieces od furniture that seemed so mordern, e.g. Eames, yet when I saw the date of manufacture in the 30s and 4os I was awestruck

.
We must also be aware if "old designs" many are constantly in use,you dont usually read them as period pieces, many Miller and Knoll pieces retain currency in this manner...

Diziynin'
Classic...its definitely put me throught the thought again of licensed or knockoff...Something classic Should not be licensed...But that can question "What is Mustang without the Ford?" But who Designed the Ford? I would like to see his Signature on it....in some cases I guess the Shelby would have that....
But a "classic" to me are pieces of the time or movement which symbolized or even pioneered that movement to its true intentions....(not to mention they are of popular demand or they are envyed by those informed and not informed about its movement it stood for)
That why we have the classic "Mustang" It well represented the American Muscle car phenomena.. It is why we have "classic" hits on our radios... From Jimmy to The Doors--- Rock n' Roll icons.
From NWA and Dr. Dre- Gangsta Rap
To Del La Sol and Run DMC- Hip-Hop
We always have talked about what was produced from these classics: What the Mustang did for the automotive industry, what the Barcelona chair Did for the Furniture industry, what NWA Did for the Rap music industry... Not what the Label Did for the Industries..
