Can anyone give input about WhiteOnWhite.com?
I am interested in purchasing a couple of pieces of furniture from WhiteOnWhite.com, who sell low-cost reproductions.
I would appreciate receiving information about the quality of the pieces sold by WOW from anyone out there who has seen or purchased furniture from them.
Your feedback will be much appreciated!
Thank you,
David

White on White quality
A year or so ago I went down to White on White to check out their stuff after the NY Times did a little piece on their "international-style" sofa selling for only $1,000... It was a terrible piece of furniture. It looked miniature, too, like they had sized it down considerably in order to make it less expensive. I'd use it in a beach house or something. Haven't checked out their web site at all, though.

why buy repro furniture or even old classics, this is the 21st century, and there are new talented designers everywhere, buy new design or we will be forever stuck in the past!!

i work near White's store in...
i work near White's store in lower Manhattan and occasionally go in to take a look. i agree with most of the others here -- their reproductions are generally not of very good quality. Their Eames shell chairs are especially bad; the fiberglass is awful.
that said, however, I do think that White serves a need -- there are people who like the designs but simply can't afford to buy the originals (even 2nd hand, assuming you can find it readily). for instance, White now makes a version of Saarinen's womb chair, which at least looked quite like the original and felt as comfortable (I can't attest to quality or how long it would last, though). And it sold for about $900, versus maybe twice as much for the Knoll original. the same goes for White's version of Jacobsen's egg chair, Nelson's coconut chair, and Eames' plywood screen in rosewood.
to each her own is my take on this. modern repros, authorized or not, ain't my thing, but they do the trick for others. and so be it.

i would recomend reading...
i would recomend reading past threads about white on white, but more importantly going to their showroom and looking at the pieces. if you don't live in new york city, wait until you go there on business or something like that. i say this because i've gone there a few times and found some of their pieces to be absolutely awful, while some looked pretty good. the panton chair that they make is ugly and badly done, as are the eames fiberglass chairs (as stated above), their aluminum group chairs are good, but their bases are standard chair bases which look pretty bad. their bertoia diamond chairs are very good, but have a double wire around the edge, like the eames wire side chairs. their corbusier couches range, since they offer different makes of it, and some have paper thin leather that will probably not last a year. so, you should really go and take a look, since it varies. depending on the piece you are looking for, you may want to look for it used instead. i've had great luck by buying used pieces that are in near new condition for about 50% less than if they were new. consider doing that, they may not have warranties, but you can usually find them in great condition and from the original manufacturers.
