Non-Nelson/Miller Clocks
Ok...this isn't a coup against the Nelson Clock threads, which are great! With all the Nelson chatter, and the Arne Jacobsen clock popping up courtesy of LRF, thought other designer clocks could use some adulation. Let's see what else is out there!

Here's a humble clock of mine by Seth Thomas

I really like
the clock on the bottom. I believe that it might be the same clock my grandparents used to own...or close to it. I think my uncle might have claimed it. I like the other clocks too, but that's my fave out of the ones you posted.

You could leave it
Elgin, Welby, Westclox, Seth Thomas appears to be the most prolific mid-century starburst style clock producers aside Nelson(correct if needed).

LRF, you could leave the Nelson hands on. Gives it a distinctive character unlikey found elsewhere.

i have four new sets of clock hands coming from Vitra so i might
use a set from one of those, as i want to use two sets for t he two meridan clocks I bought in the last 2 weeks both came with out hands, (you sorta wonder what happens to the old hands) but that clock with the nelson hands on it was the first clock i ever bought at a flee market and I still love it cause it was so different and was typical of the early part of the midcentury with the starburst and the atomic balls theme that we all loved.
The first clock is by westclock and it is all teak wood
2)Is a German clock that had a key that i could not get to work or either could the clock shop so we just put a quartz in it.
3)welby great design on that one
4)mastercrafters light brass
5)welby

Before the spelling police jump on this, its actually FrederiC Weinberg and also often mistakenly(?) spelled Frederick Weinberg.

A google image search brings up some nice examples of his work. And to stay on point, here's the wall clock

those Weinberg clocks
They're really cool, but since the root of the clock is a Nelson ball clock, I can help thinking they kinda of a reproduction....couldn't he have come up with a more original basic concept?

It's kinda like taking a Ray Eames Time-Life stool and turning it into a floor lamp, isn't it?

The table clock also reminds me of, in both name and design, clocks done by Mexican artist Pedro Friedberg. However Friedberg is considerably more whimsical and imaginative!

More info?
LRF, can you give me more info (model numbers, etc.) on either or both of your last two (the Mastercrafters and the Welby with the wood points)?

I'd like to find one of those two to put above my fireplace (my wife and I just bought a mid-century modern ranch with a stone fireplace that's just BEGGING for a starburst clock!)

the masterclock number is 542 and it is very light aluumium in brass color with black face
the welby has no model number it is wood with a white face both bought 10 years ago on ebay

I think for the fireplace one that you might like is the nelson star
I have the original from 1959

vitra sells it for 340.00 white on white 150.00 and all world when he stock sells it for 69.99 and that is a great deal

also the turbine clock sells at vitra for around540.00 white 150.00 and all world 85.00 that clock is in stock at all world

any one of these clocks would look great on your fireplace,

you never know what you would find on ebay

Thanks, LRF
The Mastercrafters clock is the closest I've been able to find to what I originally had in mind. How wide is yours across the points? I've found one on ebay that's 30in across the points, but I think that may be a little big for the space.

I really want something that is star shaped (I don't like that the points on the Turbine are "bent") and has exactly 12 points (seems logical for a clock, no?)

A lot of stuff in our house is gold toned (including the fireplace doors), so something like the Masterclock or the Welby would fit in nicely.

This is the fireplace where the clock will hang (the statue, speakers, and flowers belonged to the previous owner):

Thanks for your time!

It is exactly 30 inchs across it is a very light
weight clock as it is a brass aluminum , it is a great master craft clock, that and the welbys are great, and for some reason have gotten hard to find,
also check some of the westclocks,
When i was buying them years ago they use to have 100s when ebay first started, but lately they have gotten harder to find.

It is 11 3/4" square, aluminum, very deep relief carving and downright beautiful.

Anyone have any ideas on it?

Elgin Starburst Clock
I just bought my first starburst clock on eBay. It is an Elgin with alternating wood spokes and brass rods/balls. The seller noted that the movement does not work. For those mid-century clock experts out there, I have a few questions:

1. Is there a website that provides a little more info about this Elgin company? I have read that the starburst Elgin clocks were made in Germany, but there are Elgin Clock, Elgin Watch, and Elgin Clock repair companies in nearby Elgin, IL that keep popping up in Google searches. This particular design seems to be somewhat popular as many examples pop up in searches. However, background info is scarce.

2. I see fairly inexpensive movement replacement kits on eBay. Is this the best approach, or can someone recommend a better option for this type of clock?

3. Any other thoughts or recommendations? Although I have never attempted clock repair, I consider myself fairly handy on doing things like this.

The attached image is from the listing. I have not yet received the clock for firsthand inspection.

Thanks.

cdsilva....
I replaced the original working movement in my Elgin starburst clock to a silent mechanism.
I bought a good quality one with a Japanese movement at a cost of $6. It took about 10 minutes to install, was very easy to do and keeps exceptionally good time. These clocks do not require any more expensive or complicated inner workings.
Very nice clock btw...

added: if you decide to do it yourself, make sure the hands will fit on the new mechanism properly, there are a few different varieties. I had no issues with the Elgin clock, but I did have trouble when replacing the works on another starburst clock....I ended up having to replace the hands altogether.

cdsilva...
The original movement was a ticking one that drove me bananas, which is why I opted to replace it for a silent (smooth) mechanism....

You should have no trouble sourcing the clock works locally: craft stores, etc...you could even go to a thrift store, buy a clock that works and take the mechanism out of it, but they are so inexpensive you might as well buy new.

I live yonder Canada way and bought mine at Lee Valley.

I received the Elgin clock,...
I received the Elgin clock, and disassembled the spokes last night for cleaning. There is a decent amount of rust on the brass parts that I would like to clean. I believe they are brass-plated, as a magnet sticks to them. I am not looking to revert the look back to new, but rather reduce/clean up the rust, and then treat the metal in the proper way to minimize future deterioration.

I have read that using a brass cleaner on rusty brass plate might end up removing the brass layer itself, which I do not want to do.

Has anyone done a similar cleaning job, and can they recommend on how best to proceed? Thanks.
