Knoll Womb Settee
I've just purchased a Womb Chair settee that was neglected. The foam (?) & fabric are both dry rotted and will soon be recovered. :)

One problem.. I'm missing both cushions. However I heard that I may be able to find a pattern for these two pieces online so that it can be reconstructed back to it's original form.

Google has yielded nothing and I don't know anyone locally who has this piece to use their cushions as an example.

Any advice / help would be greatly appreciated!

true
although I've never had anything recovered before and wasn't sure if they would be able to go off an image alone. I'm sure you're right.

One last question, does anyone know the dimensions ( depth ) of the cushions
Thanks

Depths
Depths

19.5" for the lower cushion

16.5 For the back cushion

Approximately 4" thick at the widest point

these are for the chair (3 years old) I'm guessing there the same for the settee,

Could you post some before and after pics if possible :) always been curious about how these are upholstered

thank you..
So much for posting the measurements. That's a great help.
I will gladly post some before and after pics.

The before condition is sad to say the least, but I purchased the frame for $100 so I can't complain.

Before
Sad shape. It sat in a barn for 20 years. The frame appears to in excellent condition though.

I can't wait to see this piece completely revived.

Again thank you guys for your help.

Wow, Envy...
she's in poor condition, but any good mid century reupholsterer should be able to replicate the cushions.

Are you going to use the classic red Knoll fabric? It sure seems like the red color is iconic.

Where are you located? Is there an upolsterer in your city that specializes in mis-century modern design? You'll need an experienced guy to understand how to get it right.

I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota and there's a guy in town that could certainly do it perfectly.

The red Knoll fabric seems...
The red Knoll fabric seems to be the most popular one at the moment, but if you look at older examples, they are often in other colors, such as orange, pale yellow, pale pink or even just a light grey... Much nicer in my opinion.

If it were me, I would...
If it were me, I would powder coat the frame black (they were available this way) and reupholster in a pale yellow ... I would stay away from red.

If you're really adventurous, you could recoat the base in brass and reupholster in a power blue or white leather!

Frame looks decent except for the feet.

I like the burnt orange fabric myself.

Love restoration threads! cant wait to see this complete :)

my womb chair is a pale yellow, looks great (IMO) however its not the most practical I'd cry if i spilt anything on it :(

If the settee was mine (I wish) i'd go for a black boucle fabric (onyx) with a satin black frame

I think
I think the womb looks spectacular with the frame a distinct contrast to the fabric. Satin black on the frame and a deep, saturated color on the fabric.

Just found this at one of the big auction sites
Not my choice, but a quality fabric and an interesting look......

Oh, and I would certainly suggest you leave the metal silver chrome, and not do it in black.

Proper fabric width
I just purchased a womb settee for 3k & it needs to be redone! They seem to have dried up, & it's been years since I've seen one available, so I decided to go for this one since I had the cash to spend this time. Makes me wish I had jumped on one years ago when they seemed much more abundant & cheaper.

I have been talking with a guy who can reupholster it (he used to do the Womb chairs for Knoll in the 60's!) & he has advised me that the fabric should be 58" wide to properly cover the size of the settee. Not as easy to find, since most fabrics today are 54".

barrympls!!!
I've come across this forum to help me find out if the 3 "womb" chairs that my boss just gave me could be real, and I find this topic of recovering.

I have 3 teal colored chairs as of yesterday and finally went to the office to bring one home. They are worn and discolored but in fantastic shape. I don't know if they are real as there are no tags of any kind and they have been in our main lobby for over 15 years.

Whether real or not, I want to recover one, possibly two of them and BARRY MPLS said he knew of a place in town (Minneapolis). I'm in St. Paul and was wondering if I could get the name of the shop.

Does anyone know of a way I can tell if these could be the real deal?
Thanks all--I'm off to scour the rest of these boards!

Great!
Hey there,
I just took a couple for you to peek at. Let me know what you think. Like I said, either way, I love them, but am really curious as to the authenticity.
Thank-you!

Thank you...
for the name of the reupholsterer. I will definitely give them a call!

I like the teal color too. The fabric is discolored from being in the lobby and I think from the wear and tear the foam has been flattened out. I just love them though!

By the way, I'm in Minneapolis; which building did these chairs come from?

Hi Barry!
I finally got around to talking to David today. Sooo nice and knowledgeable too. He thinks that since the chairs are older that they probably are authentic womb chairs. He even offered to look at one if I bring it by to give it his opinion!

Thanks so much for the referral. We're not ready to recover yet (we'll have to save up!), but once we're in a new home (hopefully soon!) we'll figure out the color scheme and give him a call.

David at Remnants does great work and I can show you the stuff he did for me.
