[OFF TOPIC] Sarah Palin - part 4
So, this developing story is interesting. Maybe it's real. It's reminiscent of when Morton Downey Jr. alleged he was attacked by neo-Nazis who carved a backward swastika on his forehead. Check out the other critiques--the shallow cut, the unswollen black eye, etc., not to mention the fact the she was blithely Twittering before and after the alleged incident.

This reminds me of a line by...
This reminds me of a line by Sappho: "If you are squeamish, do not prod the beach rubble".

Regardless of whether or not the attack was real, right-wing media grabbed onto the story immediately and reported it as true despite the obvious red flags. On the Drudge Report it was the leading story in bold red text. Only the animated siren was missing.

I think they wanted it to be real--in the sense that they wanted to be able to report that some anonymous 6.4 black man went crazy upon seeing a McCain sticker, attacking a woman, and a white Republican woman at that.

I'll remove her image in a few days. But really, people, the Palin crazies have strewn rubble on the beach that deserves to be looked at directly.

It is
certainly a phenomenon, isn't it ? Will we have forgotten all about her in a month, or will we be saddled with her for four or more years ?

How about that $150,000 campaign wardrobe ? Now they're saying the clothes will be donated to the needy, or something.

I came across this letter from the late Norman Mailer, written to a (conservative) friend in 1999:

". . .While the Democrats, and Clinton first, disgust me with what I call their "boutique politics" -- a little bit here, a little bit there, and served with loads of bullshit slathered over it -- the Republicans are a psychotic monstrosity. On the one hand they're God, flag and family -- although few of them would know Jesus Christ if he were standing at the next urinal pissing along with them -- and an astonishing number never served in the armed forces nor heard a bullet, and being politicians, they cheat like jackrabbits on their wives and families. But all right, what's the use of being a politician if you can't make a living at being a hypocrite ? The point is: the Republican Party is schizophrenic: on the one hand, they are, as I say, for God, flag and family, but on the other, they are for the unbridled expansion of capitalism, and thereby leave out something that might still be important. . .which is that Jesus, like Karl Marx, thought [that] money leaches out all other values. Indeed, it does. If the country is going to pot, and it certainly is, I think you could graph the decline not only in morals, but in a sense of social éclat and social standards -- I think you could plot the decline right next to the rise of the Dow Jones -- the higher the Dow, the lower the standards. Money destroys all other values. I can even respect the right wing Republicans for holding a few standards, as they do, but they never take on capitalism which, unbridled, is the worst scourge of human value we have right now. There may have been a time when Communism was a worst scourge, but now we're the leaders, and I suggest you consider living with the notion that the party of your choice is paralyzed in its moral centers. . ."

Earlier he had written "The fact of the matter. . .for me, is that the Republican Party is profoundly divided between those who believe in family values. . .and those who believe in a free market. And the two are absolutely divided. You could fit the Democratic Party between them. . ."

Money "destroys all other values", Norman?
Were that statement even remotely true, it stands to reason that the most moral, principled people would be among the poorest--- not my experience, by a long shot.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd's injuries were self-inflicted.

Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.

Todd initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and "the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction."

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

....................................

Earlier today, John Moody, executive vice president at Fox News, commented on his blog there that "this incident could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election. If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.

"If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting."

You rock, Woody. I now reserve the right not to remove Todd's mug. But I will out of respect for our aesthetic sensibilities.

I've been following this since last night. The news media reported it as fact from the start. Bloggers, on the other hand, were expressing skepticism. Kudos to the bloggers who win again over the gullible, agenda-driven old media.

Really, though, don't you think Mailer's basic description of the GOP is correct: two potentially conflicting imperatives -- family values and institutionalized venality -- each of which must be touted, and the inherent contradiction hopefully not noticed ?

Sounds about right to me. At least the Dems aren't saddled with such a confusing internal conflict -- are they ?

They also seem to be the party that
legislates against their own natural inclinations. Foley/Page scandal, Larry Craig/Airport Bathroom, Vitter of Louisianna/Hooker Scandal, Stevens of Alaska/250k in free renovations, Gingrich decrying Clintons indiscretions while he is doing the same thing while married. Maybe they should revisit the precept of not throwing stones while living in glass houses.

And now we have Ms. P and the GOP spending 150 k or roughly 18,000 dollars a week on clothes all the while championing that she is a person of the people. Her clothing budget was 23,000 dollars more than "Joe the Plumber's" house cost. Exactly who are these people, she is supposedly "of"?

As was mentioned tonight on Inside Washington, the campaign thus threw away the Mrs Redneck persona that may have been the one connection that worked for her. First went McCain's maverick record, then he blew the "experience card" with the Palin choice, and now Nieman Marcus-gate. I guess when contradiction is in the blood, it just comes naturally. Sure makes hypocrisy a GOP identifier, doesn't it ?

Came across this today, quite similar to the White Privilege piece
What if things were switched around? Think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? Could racism be the culprit? this most certainly must be a rhetorical question!

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, following the debate, including a three month-old infant and an unwed, high school drop-out pregnant teenage daughter and the high-school drop-out father of the child?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his college graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee? What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married? What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five. (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if Obama couldn't read from a TelePrompTer? What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes? What if Obama was the one who was known to publicly display a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected a reality, if the tables were turned, do you really believe the election  numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative characteristics in another when there is a color difference.

And, think of this - the candidates' educational backgrounds:

Barack Obama: Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in
International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Joseph Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

John McCain: United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899

Sarah Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism

You make the call.
