Risom Armchair Reweb
So I recently got a vintage Risom Armchair for $300 off CL. I talked the lady down from $450. It had the original owner it's entire life, and was bought in 1953...along with everything else at the owners estate. It's color is not the most attractive (yellow orange), and it all kind of blends together with the wood. The webbing on the chair is in worse condition than i had thought from the photos, but I still wanted it. What's your take on replacing the webbing? Am I taking away from the value? Is this chair worth anything to begin with (aside from it being a Risom chair)? I'm thinking of rewebbing it myself with a Knoll kit for $80 in flax...
Whats your take?

My take - and others will...
My take - and others will probably disagree - is that you should worry more about what will make you happy. If you think the webbing would look better in a different color, then go for it. I'm of the belief that you shouldn't buy as an investment but should buy, rather, for your own enjoyment.

Flax...eh...
I have one in the linen color (I'm guessing it's flax) that came out of the magic dumpster. I don't love the linen color against the birch/maple, altho maybe yours would look a little better beacuse your wood has probably darkened. My wood is pale and the colors blend together. If you can, check out the other Knoll samples, there are some beautiful complex colors - a rusty cinnamon, bluey grey, a greyish green. And of course red and black and yellow.
I still haven't gotten around to rewebbing mine - leaning towards the cinnamon - but it's worth consulting a pro. If you screw up the tension on one of the straps you'll experience something akin to wearing a thong. :-)

thats the color i want...but they dont make it anymore. like a rust? the Nutmeg i got a swatch of today, and i really dont like the way the nylon/cotton blend looks...it looks way to plastic.
the wood on my chair is definitely darker maple, that's why it hink the natural will look good. well see. thanks for your input!

Yes, nutmeg
That sounds like the swatch Knoll sent me. I kind of like the look of the nylon blend. The cotton webbing just seems to invite staining. But then again I'm a guy and prone to eating spaghetti in my chair in front of the telly...so the nylon also has the cleanable appeal :)
whatever you choose, post a before & after picture so we can ooh, and aaah.
