HM Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair Swivel/Tilt
Hi. I got this vintage Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair off of Craigs List. The tilting function doesn't work, and I thought this was a simple fix, replacing a spring or something. A closer look revealed that someone must have altered the piece, in an attempt to tilt what was originally fixed or something. Anyway, the chair tilts back but does not come back (or stay) up. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
Someone I know took his similar chair to a well known repair shop but was told that his chair was too old to be repaired, and my chair is as old as his. I don't want to spend a fortune reparing it, but since the over all condition is amazing, I'd like to save it if possible. Any information helps. Thanks!

tortion bar
Inside the tilt mechanism is a tortion bar. It has probably snapped in yours. It's kind of a pain in the ass to fix. Graham Mancha has it available as a spare part - see link below. I'm not sure exactly what the method is of replacing it, but Graham has always been very helpful.

Thanks LuciferSum! I don't...
Thanks LuciferSum! I don't know how that bar would fit on my chair (I think mine is missing a lot more than just a bar), but I'll contact this store and see if they can figure out.
If anyone else knows of any good repair shop in the US, or if you've successfully repaired a similar problem, please share your information. Thank you!

There have been two different tilt-base designs for the lounge chairs; they're illustrated in a pair of photos I posted to this thread:
http://www.designaddict.com/design_addict/forums/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread_show_one/thread_id/8777/
Take a look and compare what you see in those photos to what's on your chair. Graham Mancha's replacement torsion bar fits only the newer base (shown in the lower photo of the brown vinyl chair).
If you have an older base (the one shown in the upper photo), you need a replacement cylinder for the Flo-Tilt mechanism. Bassick sold millions and millions of those mechanisms, so cylinders aren't TOO hard to find... Try PPF in Minneapolis: 800 801-2523 or 612-870-0702, or [email protected] .

Thanks, fastfwd! Mine is an older one, with flo-tilt. I already contacted Graham Mancha and he explained the exact same thing. He said he could make a missing cylinder only if he had a pattern. I will contact this store you recommended now. Thanks again!

Thanks zepp02
Thanks for your photos, but that's different from my chair's mechanism; mine does not have a long shaft and the piece that connects to the seat has more streamlined design.
Does anyone have this flo-tilt mechanism for sale? Perhaps a chair with badly damaged seat but this piece intact?

Thanks again, fastfwd. I contacted Abacus, but they said they have nothing for my chair; I have to replace the entire base with another type... No thanks!

PPF has it!
Steve from PPF got back to me and told me he has a used flo-tilt cylinder. I will get it soon and let everyone know how that fits on my chair.
Thanks again fastfwd and all who helped me!

UPDATE to my Aluminum Group Lounge Chair Repair
OK, so it's been 4 months since I found out that the store called PPF in Minneapolis has the piece (flo-tilt cylinder) my chair needs. Shortly after, I paid $65 and they mailed it to me. I was so excited that I could finally fix my chair!
Long story short, I was missing more than a cylinder and was not able to fix it. PPF Steve told me that he would send me the rest of the parts, so I waited but he kept ignoring my requests and did not send me the parts.
So after 3 months of waiting I finally gave up, bought a couple of shell chair tilt bases on ebay, took them apart and used them to fix my chair. Perhaps I should have done this long time ago. Steve initially was helpful and taught me a lot about this piece (and that's why I was able to fix it by myself in the end), so I don't know why he stopped helping me. Very disappointing.
Now finally, my beautiful lounge chair is tilting back and forth flowlessly! It was worth waiting for 4 months, I guess. I have an extra cylinder that I took out from a shell chair base and put it up on ebay, in case anyone else is in need of this piece.
This picture shows what the flo-tilt mechanism part consists of, just for your information.

Hello all, I recently aquired an Aluminum Group side chair. My question is does anyone know where I can find 5 glides for it, they are missing. Oh and how much do these run for, thanks.

Repair Manual
We also managed to scavenge some cylinders from other chairs, and took pictures of the entire repair process. Big "thanks" to fastfwd, TK, and Eames Office. As a "thank you" to everyone who has been such a great resource to us, we will "pay it forward." We are in touch with Eames Office and will partner with them to put up a step-by-step pictoral repair manual on the Internet for those of us with early production Herman Miller Eames Aluminum Group Loungers with (flo-tilt) tilt/swivel mechanism. Look for that in a couple months. -Jessica

can't believe this site! I have an Eames in great condition - except it creaks terribly when it tilts (and does not do so smoothly). Any ideas? Is it worth fixing? selling? and if so, how much should I ask?
thanks

We're awful, but we haven't....
We're awful, but we haven't. We moved right after that post to our (first!) house and everything's been in shambles for three months.
The pictures we took were 25MB but it's hard for us to figure out how to transmit those via e-mail. We're planning on getting it done soon. I think, for the most part, the pictures (which are truly step-by-step) are self-explanatory, but my husband wants to at least write up the captions. We've promised them to the guy at Eames Office, so look for them there at some point.

Eames Aluminum Lounge chair Swivel / Tilt
Hello Jessica,
My father passed away a year ago and I managed to get over to Paris (France) where I live, his beloved Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair. But the swivel system is broken. Have you put your repair manual on line ? Can you send it via e-mail ?
In France, the chair was built by Vitra and apparently, it's a different swivel system. I also need the piece and will gladly send the picture pour the part I need to anybody who can give me information.
Warm regards from Paris,
DABS

Flo-Tilt mechanisms
I have to apologize... we still haven't mailed off those repair pictures to the Eames Office. You will need a flo-tilt mechanism (which we cannibalized off two $200 shell chairs we found in a junk shop). They show up on eBay every once in awhile, but can be expensive.

where to get flo-tilt cylinder?
Where do I get a part like that? I assume that if the chair falls backwards and forwards a bit without any resistance and then just hits metal, that's what's missing.
Best,

Repair of Old Version Eames Chair Flo-Tilt Mechanism
To Jessica T.
Is there any way you could please just send your photos to us or the Eames guy (what is his name?) so that we could fix our old aluminum Eames chair we love and really want to use? We've been waiting for such a long, long time for the photos you took knowing they would be really, really helpful to us during the repair process, even without any captions.
Also, could we get the exact name and make of shell chairs you cannibalized?
Thank you for any help you can give us with this and
Happy New Year!
Steve M.
