Has anyone ordered couches at Steelform?
Hi all!

I wanna know if anyone of you has already ordered couches at Steelform.com (www.steelform.com) in Italy? Is this enterprise serious? What about the quality of leather, steel and finish? Is the relation price/quality good or bad?

I wanna buy Le Corbusier LC2 3-seater in leather. What is the difference to the original producer Cassina? What about other lower price suppliers? Any experience gained from you?

Thanx in advance!

Regards,

Patrick.

My brother ordered a pavilion chair from them and was very happy. Looks like a well-made piece of furniture, but he's not done any side-by-side comparisons with a Knoll. Very helpful people.

Avoid Artemia Design
Several posters have mentioned Steelform. One of their nearby competitors is Artemia Design, located in Garda, Italy. Although their listed prices are lower than Steelform I strongly suggest that people avoid placing an order with them.

They very quickly posted a charge to my card, but then offered excuses for their delays for several months.

Eventually they said that they could not ship my order to me. Eventually they offered a full refund. After several weeks a credit appeared on my account, however the amount that they credited was significantly less than the original charge.

Artemia stopped responding to my email as I attempted to resolve the problem. I finally had to dispute the charge with my credit card company and reported their behavior as fraud.

Steelform customer
I bought an Eames LCW from them about six months ago. I was a bit dubious at first as the ordering department is in Spain, enquiries are dealt with in the US and the good shipped from Italy.

That said, the people in Spain were responsive and helpful. The goods arrived as promised, were exceptionally well packed and great quality, (the vitra Eames LCW is over £500 GBP which is way to excessive and Herman Miller versions are to difficult to get hold of in the UK) I was really pleased with the whole process but have to admit that site does not instill confidence that there is 'anyone at home' get over this and you should be happy.

LC2 3 Seater from Steelform
I'm interested in purchasing that same item. Did you end up buying it and, if so, were you happy with the purchase? If not, did you buy from someone else?

Steelform quality issues
About one year ago, I bought an LC 4 lounge chair at Steelform for use in my office. As I'm sitting on it with my laptop for several hours a day, I can say that it has passed the quality test so far. In regard to leather quality, I have to point out though, that I did not get the standard leather, but an upgrade to anilin leather. This better leather is available for all of the Steelform products but you will have to add about 10 or 15 percent to the initial price. Still, it's a lot cheaper than Vitra or Knoll... Overall, I have to say that I'm very pleased with my LC 4 and would definitely buy again at Steelform. Another interesting source might be www.newage-living.com. They also sent me leather samples and answered all of my questions in a satisfying way.

I had a similar experiance...
I had a similar experiance with NEWAGE LIVING in Manchester last spring. They immediately charged my credit card. Then a person pretained, that delivery to SWITZERLAND is not possible.
As I could not get myself the furniture from Germany, they first said, they would refund the amount of appr. sFr. 1300.-.
Now it is 8 months later and I am still missing the money.
I strongly advuse You not to order from them.

steelform are excellent
I ordered 3 Corbusier Grand Confort soffas in dark brown leather from SF plus a Chaise and a Barcelona bed. They arrived at my home in Hong Kong a mere 5 days after the order was completed and i could not be more delighted with them. they are superbly made. beautiful leather. spotless chrome. One year later they all look even better a bit 'lived in'. The people at SF are incredibly helpful and the after sales is great. i will be ordering from them again for my house in New Zealand. you will not find better quality or price. believe me i looked for a year before i bought from SF. Am I missing something here?
A Barcelona chair from Steelform costs roughly $2,300.

The authentic Knoll version retails in the US for roughly $3,500- and you can often find it cheaper...

Going with the Steelform is not a smart move. My reasoning is this: A knockoff is a knockoff is a knockoff when it comes to resale value. A Knoll, however, retains it's resale value. For the money you'd spend on a Steelform, it's wiser to spend the extra grand on the Knoll and retain your investment.

If you can't swing the Knoll, get the nicest quality knockoff you can find for around six hundred bucks until you can afford the Knoll...

Depends where you are...
In Europe the difference is a bit bigger. The Steelform costs ? 1200,- where as the Knoll costs around ? 4300,-. Now you can already buy 3 Steelforms and have another ? 700,- left.
About return value you are absolutely right. But then you have to decide for yourself; do you buy the barcelona because you like the design and want to enjoy it in your own house for years to come, or do you want to buy it as an investment with the thought of selling it again within the next few years. This is an essential question in this matter. I think most people don't buy furniture with resell value in the back of their mind.

About the Euros
You're absolutely right, wasn't thinking...

But I still say the Barcelonas there are very overpriced... that particular chair and also the Wassily, are in my opinion, some of the easiest chairs to replicate well. You need good materials, solid construction, fairly accurate dimensions, and you're good to go... I've never understood the $800 dollar Room and Board Wassily- the chair is steel tubes and saddle leather! There are literally hundreds of knock-offs of identical quality for 250 bucks. And there are tons of Barcelona replicas featuring high-grade solid polished steel frames and quality-foam, well-stitched, fine leather cushions... for six to eight hundred bucks.

I'm not saying that there aren't loads of cheap monstrosities out there, because there are, but the good ones aren't so hard to find as to force people to pay into the thousands for something that at the end of the day is still a knockoff.

As for resale, I think about that before any big purchase. I'm in my twenties and single now. What if I get married, move into a bigger place and go in another design direction? Do I want to take a bath on something I could have had for a third of the price? Figuring in investment retainment is just smart shopping. I think you should always do it.

Steelform are brilliant
We bought an Eames lounge and ottoman from them some years ago; it arrived in Australia very quickly, and is beautiful, has lasted exceptionally well. We decided to go with them because they offered a full 7-day money back guarantee, for any reason, with no restrocking fee and inclusive of shipping charges. This speaks of their confidence in the quality of their product, which is well-deserved.
