Beautiful!
I only recognize the one in the third pic. Any info on the others?
Floor lamps usually cost more to buy and ship, and seem harder to place than table lamps, but when you get them right they can really make a room all on their own I think.
My latest purchase is a floor lamp, actually:

woodywood...do you really like the Tord Boontje one? Does it give off any useful light?
Here's one of my fav's. Bought this years ago in Provincetown, MA at a very cool shop called 'Wa'. They're still there, link below....asian decor items and antiques with a modernist sensibility...loved the place

The first is the Eclipse lamp by Mauricio Klabin. The second is a Laurel lamp, designer unknown to me. The fourth is Lightolier, also unknown.
Olive, I think the Midsummer lamp functions just fine. I use it at the bedside with a lower wattage bulb. It provides good light over the bed, while the rest of the room is somewhat dim. But the light is definitely more diffuse than the photo suggests.

Not mid-century, but still...
Michele De Lucchi's Tolomeo: The world's most functional desk lamp (in my opinion).
Also an electric-lamp alternative that I've lately found myself using more and more.
Apologies for the quality of all these photos, by the way. Cellphone camera, laziness, and alcohol have conspired to make them fuzzy, ill-composed, and unbalanced. Like me.

Do you mean
the Greta Grossman "Anywhere" lamp? That's the one with the greyish round shade and the curved metal leg.
This one was a limited edition high quality knockoff, which I was lucky to get. The original can fetch over $700.00.

Lots of lamps!
I knew there were some lamp addicts waiting to get out of the closet.
Olive, I like it. Reminds me a bit also how rare it is to see anything from Asia discussed or displayed here.
woodywood, thanks. Laurel and Lightolier lamps are quite hard to find in Europe, unfortunately.
barry, great collection. I've never seen anything like the one in your last image. What is that? And the one woodywood asked about? Love the rug also.
trittium, another fantastic collection. Some I've never seen or heard of. That chair is interesting too. It looks to be made of concrete. What is it?
Brent, I knew someone here had that Robsjohn-Gibbings, but couldn't remember who it was. It's beautiful. I can understand why it is your favourite.
fastwd, impressive collection. Is the first one by George Nelson? Also, could you elaborate on how the Tolomeo is the world's most functional desk lamp? I am not arguing that it is or is not, I am just curious of what you think sets it apart from other anglepoise lamps. That was a hilarious description of your qualities, by the way. You're also right that there is no need for midcentury lamps only. Everything goes!
Robert, great set. We have the same Philips lamp. I see no bulb though. What do you use in it? Have you tried the 100 watt mirrored bulbs? I use 40 W but noticed during my last visit to the lamp store that the 100 is considerably larger. It might look even better. I have been eyeing that orange model you have also. It's such an uplifting shape and color.
Nick, love them. I have two AJ floor lamps, but am still lusting after the desk version you have. I'd like that Colombo too, or any one of his lamps. The one you have is about two meters high, isn't it? It's a nice height, I think.
Zanone, lovely collection, and wonderful colors. I've always loved the Memphis lamps.
I want every single lamp posted so far.

Yeah, the first one is by George Nelson. Designed in 1955 or so, produced by Koch & Lowy. I think it's a beautiful lamp, but the aluminum body and three-way rotary switch get HOT after the lamp has been left on for a while; I'd pay almost anything for a three-way LED bulb to replace the 50-100-150W incandescent that's in there now.
As for the Tolomeo... Maybe "most functional" isn't true anymore -- the lamp was designed over 20 years ago, and I HOPE new lamps have built upon its successful features -- but it certainly was true when I first saw it in the late 80s. More in a future message; have to go to a meeting now.

Whoops
I get my Greta's mixed-up! At least I didn't say Greta Garbo.
That weird tall eyeball lamp is a super rare Cobra lamp that a friend had back in the 1990's. It's a definite high-end art lamp, designed Angelo Lelli for Arredoluce in 1964. It's a very rare and expensive lamp....sometimes found at 1st Dibs for thousands of buckaroos.

Tolomeo's functionality
a) It's big, so it clears computer monitors (which were just starting to appear on mainstream office desks when the lamp was designed). Those monitors were CRTs back then -- as deep as they were wide -- so when they were illuminated by a small lamp on one side of the desk, they'd throw the other side of the desk completely into shadow. If you sometimes needed to light that side of your desk, you'd have to get an additional lamp.
b) The wide reflector lets the lamp illuminate a large portion of your desk without having to lift it so high or tilt it so far back that the bulb shines straight into your eyes. Older anglepoise lamps generally had tighter-focusing reflectors, designed for casting a small pool of light on a single page -- no good for simultaneously illuminating a computer keyboard AND a sheet of paper or a book.
c) The reflector head rotates 360 degrees and swivels nearly as far; without moving the arms, you can shine the light directly on everything in the room except the upper few inches of the lamp's upper arm.
d) The opening in the back of the reflector head allows diffuse light to shine upward so you can see the rest of the room without having to switch on another lamp.
e) It takes standard incandescent light bulbs, available everywhere.
f) It doesn't get searingly hot, even with a 100W bulb; you can reach up and move it without looking.
Plus it looks fantastic and moves smoothly and doesn't have rattly external springs.

What will be weird
is that in a few short years, incadescent bulbs will be either outlawed or increasingly scarce, and so far, many of my lamps will not fit the current lot of compact florescent bulbs, and the LED bulbs are way too expensive.
It'll be interesting to see if the lighting stores around will start carrying narrow bulbs and shorts ones for these 'specialty' lamps.
Besides, at this point, I prefer the light given by the incadescent bulbs, darn it.

Archimoon and AJ Visors
Gustaf: I really like that Archimoon; it's my favorite Starck lamp by far.
Although I have to say that of all the beautiful lamps posted so far, the one I desire most is the AJ Visor that Gustaf, NickR60, and Robert1960 have. Both the floor and desk models are SO good-looking...

Can't have lamps :-(
I have traded all things that rest on tabletops and all things that could be pulled down for an active 3-year-old. I do have a pair of cheap, round paper lanterns hanging next to my couch, though. One was hit by a helicopter and ripped.
Barry, agreed on the new bulbs -- I dislike them. My neighbor's house has all white, vinyl blinds and compact fluorescent bulbs, and it glows an eerie blue at night.
Lots of white walls. Are white walls a must for design addicts?

I enjoyed the essay. You build a strong case. There may very well not be a better anglepoise around for all I know.
The Archimoon: as much as I like its looks and that it's a rather subtle contemporary interpretation of the anglepoise, it is not very flexible. Also, the shade has a tendency to come loose after a while and it's a hassle to retighten. Italian temperament I suppose. It's going to be replaced shortly.
Barry, I hear you. I much prefer the color temperature of incandescents. Plus they don't contain any mercury. Of the low energy brands I have tried, Megaman looks the best.
I share everyone's love of the AJ lamp. I don't think I will ever get tired of seeing it. I also have it in black.
This is another lamp in the same league (sorry for the bad photo, but I guess everyone will recognize it anyway):

You can get CFLs in a color temperature that is similar to incandescent light (i.e. "warm"). 2700K is a common choice.

Gustav: Sorry I don't have...
Gustav: Sorry I don't have my camera with me right now and my house's a mess at the moment, so maybe that's for the best...
I have some Grossman, Alf Svensson and also some unattributed Swedish lamps, which I like a lot. Most of my lamps are from the early 1950's, but I also have a set of 3 of Tom Dixon's 'Beat' pendants, which hopefully adds some contemporary air to my home, even though these are fairly retro in their design too...
Erik H: The cone shade floor lamps of Devriendt's are really nice. I did not know his work before. The yellow floor lamp looks too familiar though. It must be a 1950-60's design, -right?

Anagram
What a lovely thread ! I enjoyed looking at all those nice lamps.
I don't know why but those scandinavian designers surely make wonderful designs. Is it bc of their dark weather that they know how celebrate light ? I love that AJ visor, and those white poul henningsen (or similar) ones.
PS the Greta - lamp is an anagram for Great lamp: very correct indeed ! :o)
I'll try to post some photos, but most things are stored away, so I improvised a bit..

One more Post Modern Lamp....
This lamp was designed by Sottsass for Memphis-1985 and is called "Bay" and has a nice amber glow from lucite rings with only a 5w bulb.Looks like a Art Deco or Art Moderne design with the concentric rings.

Woody, that bronze Laurel lam...
Woody, that bronze Laurel lamp is to die for ! I have never seen one like that before. I don't think they are around here (europe) that much, you lucky americans. It looks amazing !
Gustaf, that black floor lamp is another beauty, do you have any info on it ? The black organic shade reminds me of Serge Mouille, but the unusual small holes in the shade form such a lovely detail. Do you know if it's by him ? it's a superb lighting sculpture either way.

Thanks all
trittium, thanks for the chair info. Very nice! I have to research it.
woodywood, so they say, but I am yet to find an exact match. Haven't tried that many tough, so there is still hope. But there's also the form factor. Most look hideous, either in terms of their shape, or, for the few that get the pear shape right, in translucence and finish. Plus they need time to reach full intensity. Having said this, I know I am only postponing the inevitable.
Alexander, no problem. I was just curious because I know your taste is impeccable! Sounds great from your description though. I really like the Tom Dixon lights. One of my favorite contemporary designers.
Erik, sounds great. I hope you remember this thread when your lamp arrives :)
uwe, very nice. Even the Ikea lamp looks good. I am afraid I can't help with the identification. I do not think it is a Fog & Morup though (a guess posted in your thread). Like Nick, I love that Colombo lamp!
ite, thanks. That Vico Magistretti light (I don't remember its name) is my favourite of the three you posted. Your home also looks great, and filled with natural light. During winter, I only get to see natural light in my apartment over the weekends. It's dark when I go to work, and dark when I go home... a situation probably similar to what Poul Henningsen experienced on his way home from work when he realised that the Danes needed better lamps! So I think you have a point about the dark weather playing an important part in the process.
Zanone, that is fantastic. I agree that it seems to transcend different styles. Captivating! Probably my favorite of the ones you posted.
ite, to answer your second post, it is not a Serge Mouille. I wish it was. But you have a good eye. It's actually "in the manner of Serge Mouille", which is more obvious in the photo below. I like it a lot, and think it's different enough not to be considered a knock off. I would prefer a Serge of course, but even the reeditions are way over my budget.
Bario, thanks. Lovely rooms. A lamp thread can't have too many Italians! I wonder if yours is the first Achille Castiglioni lamp posted in this thread? I have to go back and check. If yes, I'm surprised it took this long. Also great to see the Tizio in situ! I think it's koen's favourite lamp, which says a lot.
Edit: Replaced the image.

Thanks for contributing
DudeDah, love them. You're lucky to have had that beautiful sconce come with the house. Great to see that it's been taken care of. Love that Laurel. And whoa, that's a huge Tolomeo!
visiona, very sweet lamps. That shade color does indeed look capable of casting a very pleasant glow. And how great that the last one is ceramic. Fantastic shape and choice of materials. A great set.
nike, thanks for your input but I wanted this thread to showcase lamps that the forum members own. Lamps we wish we had is probably a very different story. Please consider replacing your photos with one of your own lamp. I for one find it much more rewarding to see an object in use in someone's home than ever so perfectly captured in a commercial shot.

Love all the lamps...
and here's my favorite which hangs in the dining room - a 50's Poul Henningsen that I came upon quite by accident in a local consignment shop - with all the original papers & sticker, and seemingly never used before. The triple red reflections at night on the ceiling are wonderful!

Carolyn, nice find. Dings...
Carolyn, nice find. Dings and dents are very common in vintage PH5 lamps. You have been lucky to find one in that condition. I would remove that sticker though!
nervuss, that is a gorgeous lamp. Reminds me of a Hans Agne Jacobsson table lamp, but I think yours came first. Is it aluminum? I have only seen Max Sauze lamps in photos. They rarely turn up for sale over here.

I am a sucker for lamps
Tough to say which might be a favorite....
1) Do love the matching pair of Gerald Thurston lamps for Lightolier that I found about 15 years apart.
2)Really like this twisted wood standing lamp-Anyone have any clues as to designer/maker. Looks like Russel Wright.
3)Another unknown. Lampshade is made by Remington. Lamp is unmarked. Had the brass parts chromed.
Enjoyed seeing all of these favorites.
Do think Dudedah's 1st photo/wall sconce might be by Kurt Versen.

Regarding my table top arc lamp
I don't know who designed it, but I'm pretty sure it's Italian. I bought mine in NYC in 1994 and my reupholostery friend in Minneapolis has the exact same lamp, so it must've been well distributed and somewhat popular back in the early 1960's.
One thing I'm not so crazy about it, is that it requires a very short regular socket bulb and who knows how long I'll be able to get a bulb for it!
Finally, like a lot of my lamps, it has a confined light area due to the shade being opaque; the illumination area is very limiting....
Most of my lamps were finds but if I had thought about it, I'd be more inclinded to buy lamps that have an open-type shade that illuminates in a more open manner.

khus, great set! Thurston's lamps for Lightolier are superb, but hard to find here. I love the matching floor and desk lamps. That's a very cool sideboard too. What is it?
nervuss, thanks for the info. That's a good deal!
trittium, another great lamp. Love the material combination.
Just got this one, my new favorite:

Gustaf,
Made by Heywood-Wakefield. Rather common here in the US making them affordable. I love the simplicity of the designs. You will see lots of it on ebay. A couple of books have been produced showing a good majority of their modern lines.
I have seen very few of this particular Thurston lamp style over time, but many similar with the tripod idea.

Gustaf, I just bought a PH...
Gustaf, I just bought a PH 5. She is beautiful but I am astonished that the light is very dark to illuminate my kitchen. Currently I am using a 100 W halogen bulb (= 140 W). Maybe I should try a 140 W halogen bulb (= 200 W). But thats a lot of energy.
Do you have the same experience?

Try CFL
I noticed that the light was not as bright when we installed our PH lamp. I went with a brighter bulb but use a CFL as it saves energy, lasts longer and burns cooler.

Sure, I looked after a CFL...
Sure, I looked after a CFL but I couldn't find one with enough power (effective 200 W, 2800 lumen). Do you think 30 W CFL is enough?

CFL
40W CFL is the same as 200W incandescent.
30W CFL is about 120W incandescent.

Well, yes and no. It really depends on how you use it.
The PH5 is designed specifically to hang low over a table, i.e. primarily for task lighting. It does not work very well for general or ambient lighting. This means it will illuminate a specific area, such as a dining table, exceptionally well, but it will not provide enough illumination for an entire room, no matter what lamp you put in it.
If I remember correctly, Louis Poulsen recommends that the PH5 should hang somewhere in the range of 60-70 cm above a table. There are times when you want to hang a PH5 higher than that, but usually not.
I would recommend you get another type of lamp to illuminate your kitchen, and hang your PH5 somewhere else. Or, if your layout allows/dictates it, keep the PH5 where it is and add other lamps.
As for light sources, I have limited experience with Halogen and CFL lamps. I use a 100 W incandescent lamp in mine, which covers my needs most of the time. I think the ideal power source would be 150 W with a dimmer.
Good luck!

I have a PH5
over my Eames dining table, and at 150 watts, it illuminates the table, but not much else.
I am hoping for a swiggly smaller bulb (CF) that will be like a 250 watt bulb.

Pegboard
Those nelson lamps are unbelievably beautiful. Do keep me in mind if another one drops into your lap (he says, running in to the lamp room out of breath and late). I am here now so here are my lamps. Apologies for the terrible pics and lack of setting for most.
First the living room; A Jo Hammerborg for Fog and morup reading lamp, the base is a copper disc. a medium sized Martz at the other end of the sofa, and a Russel wright floor lamp across the room. Next is a petite Nelson wire framed accent lamp with plasticed ribbon shade that sits on my cado next to my desk. A mid 30's torchiere that I suspect may be a Rohde is in the bedroom (well, not in this pic) with a Lisa Johansen-Pape mushroom lamp on my nightstand (this one not pictured, I couldn't get a shot without showing who I have tied up in there :0 ). Over the dining table is a Nelson for Nessen bee hive pendant and in the corner is a lightolier lytespan with the vase that I still need hardware for to attach it to the pole. Lastly are three that are on their way into the mix. A 50's Stilnovo double headed floor lamp, a Thurston table lamp that I actually pulled out of a curbside pile of trash. It is in mint condition and complete with both diffusers, it just needs the shade remounted to its rings. And lastly, a nelson cylinder bubble lamp that I just got. Did I mention that I am a lamp fanatic?

Shining
I have some great lamps! All were antique/estate sale finds.
except for the eclipse and the split pine Jakobsson, the rest of the lamps are unknown designers (at least to me).
This is one of a pair of solid lucite table lamps. The one piece mold is of orange lucite.
