wire chair
My neighbor scored about twenty wire chairs of unknown orgin out of the University of Texas. I've seen one before and always wondered where it came from... His camera is shot, and I could wrangle up a photo later, but I made this quick and fugly illustration. It's very angular, and the base resembles a Bertoia almost exactly. I actually really like the design of it.

So?

Congratulations

on attempting an illustration. I'll wait for a photo before consigning it to an "Ugly Chair" or "Uncomfortable Chair" thread. . .but it's leaning in that direction. Or some direction.

No, really, thanks for trying to draw it ! Who else would take the trouble. . .?

I'm having a rough week on design fora. (That's two or more forums.) (You're welcome)

There's a set of four on Ebay.
You're right, Whitespike; they're a little more appealing in a photo than in your drawing. Still don't look very comfortable, though. (And unfortunately, the seller doesn't have an answer to your original question; he just says they're "in the manner of Bertoia".)

Platner's
wire pieces use arcs and circles rather than straight lines. Thus I wouldn't think it was accurate to say this chair is "in the style of Warren Platner."

Googling
"Fritz Hansen wire chairs," this chair shows up twice in the first 30 pages: the set at Treadway, and this single office chair at 1st Dibs. In both cases the design is "attributed" to or "in the style of" Vernor Panton . . . which means they don't know who designed it.

The chair
doesn't appear in this (presumably exhaustive) collection of designs:

It's not Platner, Panton, or Bertoia.
Also not Schindele, Tempestini, or Bloom.

Who else made wire chairs...? Oh, right. It's not Eames, either.

To me, it looks 1970s and Italian. I wonder what its upholstery was like.

Russell Woodard made wire chairs but certainly not by him. It could well be Italian, I am bored so will see what I can find (if anything).

commission

let's say these chairs were a special commission. sometime btween 1950's and late 1970's. Were they froma particular building? such as a library? who was the architect or architectural office for that building? Texas U, has its own architecture faculty, surely someone there has information, ....or might they want their chairs back??

I am certain they were manufactured by Fritz Hansen, having now located some with labels. Designer is the only question now. I felt certain about Panton, being that he made several designs out of what seems to be the exact type of wire. However, this is still an assumption on my part.

I don't believe the Platner claim one bit. Platner's designs were more elegant and the wires much smaller in gauge and more plentiful, closer together. It's alo unlike Bertoia, Eames, Woodard et al. The wire is to my eye more like the Panton stuff. The material is almost like the grocery cart above.

The more I am around this thing the more I like it. While it's not as graceful as a Bertoia, it has it's own appeal and it more comfortable. It would be great with pads, which they originally had.

It's not mine, btw, so say what you will. Interested to know what you think. Just for giggles.

Hi again
I saw a set of 4 chairs, sell for 300 dollars, in 2006 and the ebay seller called them "PANTONOVA CHAIRS" and they did have Fritz Hansen labels on them. I saved the pictures of them in my FH saved pictures. They were chrome with the same type labels that show up on swan chairs.
