Bracket/Mount to hold Table Top? (Eames Chair -> Table Conversion)
Hi. I have this Eames shell chair 4-star contract base that I plan to convert to a table. It'd be perfect if I can find a genuine Herman miller piece that connects the table top, but I don't find anyone selling it and my budget is limited.
So, is there any DIY piece (preferably made with metal/steel) that I can use for this purpose? If it's in "X" shape with the middle point that can be connected to a round pipe (which connects to the base), that'd be perfect. Any idea would be appreciated!

Spider
After a few minutes of web searching, I learned that the piece I'm looking for is called a "spider". It may be a common term for those in furniture business, but I didn't know.
I found a couple of websites that sell it, but if you have a personal experience purchasing it from somewhere or making one yourself, let me know! The search continues...

Table base
You can find a used Eames table base on eBay.

Thanks woodywood
But my point is to reuse what I have (chair base) and buy only what I need, to make a table. I don't want to buy a whole table base because 1) it's rather expensive, and 2) I'll have to waste the chair base I own. That's why I'm only looking for a table top "spider" piece that I can attach to my chair base.

What do you think?
1-1/2" steel pipe nipple with round flange. All I need now is a nice round table top!

If you glue a disc of plwood...
If you glue a disc of plwood (1" thick and
at least 1/3 the diameter of the top) to
your piece of marble or whatever you should
get away with it.
Alteranatively I think a thick disc of burl
or other highly figured timber with a
bullnose edge might look nice.
Ah, you were looking for a support,
did you try looking on the underside of
old office chairs? They are everyhwere
and I'm sure you would be able to find
some thing to fit.
