1943 Antwerp (BE)
Koen De Winter was born in 1943 in Antwerp, Belgium. He graduated with honors in ceramic technology at the École des Métiers d'art de Maredsous in 1962 before completing his education in industrial design at the Akademie voor Industriële Vormgeving Eindhoven, Holland in 1969. After working for Volvo's engineering department he returned to Holland and designed a wide range of housewares for the Danish/Dutch plastics manufacturer Rosti/Mepal. Some of these designs are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and other museum collections. In 1979 he moved to Canada where he became vice president of design for Danesco Inc. For almost a decade he combined that responsibility with his task as a professor at the Université du Québec in Montreal. He is a former president of the Canadian Industrial Designers Association. Since 1990 his design office HippoDesign Inc. has developed products for a large number of Canadian, American and European companies. He co-authored an exhibition catalogue on 20th century chairs and numerous articles. He has guest lectured in Germany, France, and in Canada. He has won several awards in industrial and graphic design, including the Design Canada Award, the Best of Canada Design Award, the Product of the Year in Frankfurt, and the prestigious Henry van de Velde career award 2005.
More recently, he has opened a ceramic studio in Québec called Atelier Orange.

stainless steel
Demeyere cooking pots and pans are known the world over for being the very best stainless steel pots on the market. This exceptional high quality is the result of in house technical developments like the Silvonox treatment as well as continuous collaboration with chefs. Sirocco is one of these exceptional products in that all the handles and knobs can be touched without any protection, even after the pots have been heated for a long period of time.

The teapot is part of a complete set of dishes and serving pieces developed in collaboration with the 'First Export Porcelain Industry' a subsidiary of the C.C.I.C.. Contrary to general expectations regarding the birthplace of porcelain, this factory was still in bad shape 20 years ago. It required an extensive stay, technical assistance to develop a complete set of decent quality.

Prior to proposing this project to Rosti A/S videostudies of users revealed that mixing bowl are rarely held horizontally and almost never under the same angle. This was the starting point for a series of three mixing bowls loose anti-slip bases. They pour very well and the content is adapted to standard portions and recipes. There is hardly any difference in wall thickness so they are produced with almost no tensions which makes them more durable. In spite of all the advantages and critical acclaim they never became a commercial success.

a comment of A McDougall-Weil :
The delight of combining tactile materials with a user-centered and carefully thought out design is obvious: especially when combined with an appealing aesthetic of functional beauty.
