Sonia Maria Scarpellini graduated in architecture from the Milan Politecnico in 2002. During studies begins collaborating with several architecture and engineering companies. Feeling the desire to directly express herself in 2003 founds AReS architecture and design studio, an ideas lab, by which she deals with industrial design, interior design and architectural & urban planning. During 2005, she designs some collections of solid surface products, manufactured and marketed by ELF Design (Design division of ELF S.r.l.)

'Eos' is a bathtub characterized by polished and linear shapes that, as its name suggests, is different because of peculiar presence of luminous leaks able to grant evocative confort times. HI-MACS solid surface material by LG, hand crafted to obtain a surface without continuity solution, grants a unique and linear surface that, bending in the correct shape, and gives the birth to the bathtub. Sole interfence to the white monolithic block of the bathtub is based on the colored shelves embedded in the sloping wall, from which they seem to transpire. The strong geometric design is made less dramatic by the daps play and by the advanced colour therapy system. A LED based system, operating in RGB mode, has been positioned on the plate of the bathtub in order to obtain luminous effects with different chromaticity that, thanks to the HI-MACS translucency properties, are absorbed by the internal walls and from those diffused inside the entire bathtub. Finally the choice to have a no-interferences bathtub led to a sequence of four solid-surface removable shelves that hide bathtub taps and fittings, as well as the LED light sources. A wireless remote control allows the user the choice of colours, the creation of a new color mixing the RGB values or the lighting of the bathtub with pre-defined cromatherapy sequences.

The project was to create a bathtub that was a unique piece of furniture which married traditional and modern design, as well as materials, and could fit well into any atmosphere. The name "Double C" comes from the shapes of the two main components that have been integrated into the project: interlocking "C"-shaped pieces of wood and Cristalan solid surface from Schock. The tub was designed to fit well either against a wall or in the center of a room, and customized with lighting openings, for options such as LED and water-proof lights inside the tub itself.
The main project challenge was to achieve a simple design with smooth lines without losing practicality.
The materials chosen to create a smooth and simple design were a warm natural wood and a black opaque solid surface material. The project was built with completely welded junctions, and the black solid surface component was made to appear seamless. To maintain both the appearance and practicality, nozzles were rested into the solid surface material itself, rendering them invisible, and the tub was equipped with an innovative overflow device that operates on the principle of communicating tanks.
"DoubleC" has been awarded the first prize in "Residential Bath" Category in the framework of the "2006 Surface Fabrication Design Contest" organized by "Surface Fabrication" magazine, reference poit for the entire solid surface sector.
