a comment of Marcelo Giménez :
This chair is worldwide best known has "BKF" -also "Butterfly"-, and was mass produced by Knoll since 1947. Very much popular, by 1950s, five millions was produced by a lot of manufacturers around the world.
The inspiration was the "Tripolina" chair -designed by Joseph Beverly Fenby of England ca. 1855, so named in Italy, where it was manufactured during 1930s. Fenby patented the Tripolina in 1877. Is was made of wood, not metal.

a comment of Martin Contal :
Bonet, Kurchan and Ferrari Hardoy (BKF) were three architects based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they had their architecural practice.
The Butterfly Chair / Sillón BKF was originally designed to furnish one apartment building that they had designed, the Edificio Charcas.
