Design as a second life. After studying Political Sciences and Marketing Management, Alain Gilles went on to work in the financial world. But one has to live one's own life. So, thanks to the moral support of his wife, he went back to studying Industrial design in France. He assisted Xavier Lust in his creations, but was eventually hired by Quinze & Milan before graduating. He worked for Arne Quinze for two and a half years as designer, developer and project manager on several high profile projects for world-renowned architects and editors.
He opened is own studio in 2007 in order to pursue his own dreams and develop his personal approach to product design, furniture design, art direction and interior architecture. He has since started to collaborate with several international firms.

This coat stand is a fusion between functionality and a sculptural movement. It is meant to look different from every angle and to create a general graphic tension within the piece. The general shape is the conceptualisation of a person catching a hat. One hand up the air just like the statue of liberty. This sculptural piece is meant to take a life of its own and become truly unique as people set their cloth on it. Only then do all the openings acquire their true function. They can be used to place things that are normally difficult to place on standard coat hangers, like gloves, scarves or anything else one might think off. The lower opening can easily be used by children who can now manage their garments by themselves, as they so much like to do.
If put in a row, a series of coat stands can become very lively room dividers.
Conceived in order to be sent as a flat pack item, both parts slide one into the other in order to give birth to the tree dimensional shape. No screws are needed. This upper market coat stand is made out of manually lacquered Mdf, but it is also available in oiled naturally-colored veneered plywood.

width: 57cm - length: 53,7cm height: 73,5cm (W: 22.5" - D: 21" - H:30")
A great classic revisited in a sculptural way with a careful attention paid to every details. Fluid and sharp construction lines that have been cut with the precision of a scalpel. A careful play with light, curvatuture lines and a formal transition between top and bottom that gives the chair its distinctive movement.
Technically, this piece has also freed itself from most of the constraints usually associated with rotomolding as it is very slim. It can be used at home, indoor or outdoor, or as a stand alone sculptural piece in a lobby for instance. It is made out of fully recyclable polyethylene that can be produced in any RAL color.

The 'Tectonic' table series is based on the idea of movement within the construction of its shape but also the ability to create unexpected freeform geometry by shifting and juxtaposing several small tables one next to the other. Hence, these tables are a combination between a plastic and a graphic approach.
The concept comes from the will to create pieces of furniture that are non-static, but also to give the end user the possibility to created their own story and, in a way, their own design when playing with several pieces.
The tables are either very graphic when treated as wire frame structures and more straight forward when used with a plain top. It is obvious that one can also play with the notion of opened and closed spaces by mixing them all together.
When presented as a wire frame, while looking from above, one can also clearly read in the movement the shape of a rose. So these pieces, in their very simplicity, aim both at speaking to our geometric and Cartesian side but also to our more romantic side.
The high and low versions are available with both a wire mesh tabletop or a plain metal one.
