The name Tonfisk means Tuna in Swedish. The idea was found unsurprisingly off a can of tuna. Very many ideas for the name had been proposed but only "Tonfisk" suited their idea for the brand: something fresh, unconventional but still very much commercial.
Its first workshop was set up in Helsinki, and in Spring 2000 Tonfisk launched internationally at Ambiente. It immediately received international recognition being invited to several exhibitions and featured extensively in the international press. Tonfisk's WARM range quickly became one of the year's newest trend objects.
By 2001 Tonfisk's customers included The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), Harrods in London and Corsocomo in Milan. Tonfisk has moved in Helsinki's suburban area of Pihlajamäki and found a new partner in ABR Innova Ltd to help it fulfil its aims.
