Between 1942 and 1955 artists couple Karin and Ernst van Leyden undertook many trips to Mexico and befriended Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Karin also went to get to know the indians of Chiapas. Under these influences she created a series of works of which this is an example. The position of the girl handling her hair is repeated in a large oil painting from this period which shows two seated women.
