Hawng Jong Nae rendered a peaceful sentiment in the matte surface and demure sky blue color of this bowl. The glaze flowing over the rim creates an unrestrained beauty, a highly praised quality of Korean pottery.
One of the first modern potters in Korea, Hwang Jong Nae was born to a pottery artists family. After studying painting in Ewha Womans University and MFA in Ceramics, College of Art and Design, Ewha Womans University, she spent her long career on teaching the next generation and reviving the long lost Punchong porcelain, the traditional style that prevailed during the 13-14th century. She held numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1961 was awarded with a Jade Crown Medal for Cultural Services by the South Korean government One of her works graces the British Museum as a fine example of modern Korean pottery.
