Modern master Marcel Breuer, born in Hungary in 1902, studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar and later taught at the Bauhaus in Dessau; his earliest projects were two legendary chair designs and residential work in Germany. In 1937 he was invited by Walter Gropius to the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he taught for nine years, and in 1946 he moved to New York City and opened an office on Eighty-eighth Street. In 1953 young architect Bob Gatje joined the firm -- by this time, Breuer had built an exceptional series of private houses in New England and was deeply involved in the design of the Paris headquarters of UNESCO. This fascinating memoir recounts daily life in Breuer's office and also offers comprehensive, firsthand discussions of many of the firm's most important projects: it is a study not only of an architect but of an architecture practice.
Drawing on his own recollections, as well as extensive interviews with other architects, friends, and clients of Breuer, Gatje re-creates more than two decades in the Breuer office. His narrative includes many of the firm's most important projects: several buildings, including the sculptural "bell banner," at Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota; major buildings for IBM in La Gaude, France, and Boca Raton, Florida; the master plan and three buildings for the Hall of Fame campus of New York University; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; numerous private residences; and the master plan and all the buildings at Flaine, an enormous ski resort high in the French Alps. Illustrated with the author's own striking drawings of many of the projects, as well as with beautiful archival images and personal snapshots, Gatje draws a vivid and affecting picture of a unique architecture office, and of one of the great architects of the modern era.

Antonio Citterio was born in Meda (Italy) in 1950. He has a degree in architecture from the Polytechnic University in Milan, and he opened his studio in 1972. He has collaborated with many Italian and foreign firms in the design sector like Ansorg, B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, Hackmann, Inda, Pozzi e Ginori, Kartell, Arclinea and Vitra. In 1981 he began designing architectural projects. From 1987 to 1996 he was associated with Terry Dwan and together they designed many buildings in Europe and Japan. Some of their most important works: the headquarters in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Milan for Esprit, an industrial plant for Vitra in Germany and for Antonio Fusco in Milan. Other commercial spaces include in 1996, the habitat store in London. In 1999 he founded Antonio Citterio and Partners, a multidisciplinary architecture and design studio, in 2000 the Milan office and the Hamburg offices were opened. Antonio Citterio has taught at Domus Academy in Milan and at Universita la Sapienza in Rome, and he has been teaching at the Architecture Academy in Mendrisio since 1999. He has won many prizes, including the Compasso d'Oro in 1987 and 1995. His products are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He currently lives and works in Milan.

"Dopotolomeo," far from being an astronomical dissertation, instead refers to the "aftermath" of a lamp, and more precisely to what has happened in the professional life of Michele De Lucchi from the birth of the famous Tolomeo lamp, conceived in 1986, until today.
"Dopotolomeo" is a diary that is as sincere and messy as the succession of events of life; it is a collage of images and thoughts, as chaotic as anything that comes to life in people's heads. The thread of this diary is drawn from the notebooks that De Lucchi has kept ever since his time at university: from the first one on squared paper for his accounts, to the larger ones with paper for water-colours, to the "small notebooks" ("quadernini"), packed with words, which now represent Michele De Lucchi's professional history.
The flow of the images of "Dopotolomeo" is reminiscent of a karstic river, in which the messages sometimes appear very clear, immediate-- the analogies to the anthropomorphous forms of many of his projects-- and others are more subtended, hidden, underground. Yet the river keeps on flowing and a little further on it resurfaces, carrying along its history, a continuous flow, even if made of discontinuity, because "it is an essential part of making projects to produce and sustain reasons of discontinuity."
