Atelier Van Lieshout: The Disciplinator
by Atelier Van Lieshout (Author) / Bettina Busse (Contributor) / Elisabeth Schweeger (Editor) / Peter Noever (Editor) / Walther Konig (Editor)

The recent Atelier van Lieshout works documented here are neatly designed, carefully built, and deeply ominous enclosed communities. The Disciplinator is built to cycle more than 70 residents through 24 bunks and mess hall seats and 36 work stations. No one comes in, no one goes out. AVL is a studio, a commune, a cult, and, for a while, a free state--led by artist Joep van Lieshout.

Maarten Van Severen: Work
by Maarten Van Severen (Author) / Lieven Daenens a.o. (Editor) / Stichting Kunstboek (Editor)

Maarten Van Severen is among Belgium's most famous furniture designers and interior decorators working today. His quest for perfection in form, detail, and fabrication is evident in his simple, pure lines and mastery of color. With a keen and critical eye, this son of an abstract painter, (Dan Van Severen) has created innumerable chairs, sofas, cabinets, and tables: .03, .04, Blue Bench, MVS Chaise, Schraag, to name just a few. In contrast to the austerity and limited range of his forms, Van Severen uses an almost flamboyant range of materials: aluminium, bakelite, carbon fibre, concrete, stone, glass, laminated bamboo, leather, plexiglass, plywood, polycarbonate, polyester, polyurethane, reinforced glass fibre, stone, and timber. There is a respect for the particularities of materials, not only their structural qualities, but as surfaces, with visual and tactile qualities. His paired-down, sleek designs--either hand-made in his home atelier in Ghent, or produced by important manufacturers such as Vitra, Edra, Bulo--continue to be very successful around the world, particularly in the United States and Japan. In addition to his furniture practice, Van Severen plays an important role as an interior designer in Van Abbemuseum (the Netherlands) and the Villa d'Ava (France) among others. And, in the near future, he will design a cutlery line for production with world-renowned Italian design firm, Alessi. This book, the most comprehensive publication about Van Severen to date, features large-plate images of his works, including dozens of new images of his designs. In addition to 170 color illustrations, Maarten Van Severen: Work also presents 70 written contributions from experts, manufacturers, and the designer's colleagues. Van Severen's classic, modernist pieces are underscored by the simple yet sophisticated design of this extensive volume.

Wilhelm Wagenfeld: (1900-1990)
by Volker Albus (Author) / Bernd Altenstein (Author) / Tilmann Buddensieg (Author) / Carlo Burschel (Author) / Siegfried Gronert (Author) / Kathrin Hager (Author) / Rudiger Joppien (Author) / Heinz Scheiffele (Author) / Walter Scheiffele (Author) / Peter Schmitt (Author) / Klaus Struve (Author) / Wilhelm Wagenfeld (Author) / Beate Manske (Editor) / Hatje Cantz Publishers (Editor)

Wilhelm Wagenfeld was undeniably one of the pioneers of German industrial design. Like no other representative of his craft, he devoted his skill and gift for invention to radically improving industrial mass production and to "redefining the weight of things." Many of his clear, functional designs went on to become classics of timeless beauty--like the Bauhaus lamp, a standard to this day, which Wagenfeld created as a twenty-four-year-old student at the Weimar Bauhaus; or the stackable Kubus storage vessels he designed in 1938; or the salt and pepper shakers from 1952 that are still widely bought and admired today for their functionality and their contribution to postwar German culture. William Wagenfeld (1900-1990) marks the centennial of the designer's birth, presenting his oeuvre in the context of important contemporaries for the first time. The contributing authors shed light upon the designer's output and its perception today from a wide range of perspectives, affirming the ever-growing relevance of Wagenfeld's designs and ideas.

Russel Wright: Creating American Lifestyle
by Donald Albrecht (Author) / Robert Schonfeld (Author) / Harry N. Abrams (Editor)

Before there was Martha Stewart, there was Russel Wright (1904-1976), the great mid-century modern American designer who pioneered the concept of "easier living" for the middle class, a uniquely American lifestyle that was gracious but contemporary and informal. Yet despite Wright's enormous influence, there has been no major survey of his work until now.

This handsome volume-which accompanies an exhibition at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City-showcases more than 125 of Wright's best designs for inexpensive, mass-produced dinnerware, textiles, and furniture. As the flurry of Wright auction activity on Ebay shows, there is a thriving collectors' market for his designs. This thorough interpretation of his achievement is eagerly anticipated.
125 illustrations, 65 in full color, 176 pages, 71/2 x 10"

Russel Wright, Good Design Is for Everyone: In His Own Words: Designs for Living, Home, Woodland Garden
by Wright Russel (Author) / Dianne H. Pilgrim (Author) / Malcolm Holzman (Author) / Universe Publishing (Editor)

Russel Wright (1904-76) was arguably the most influential U.S. designer of the early twentieth century. A visionary artist who pioneered the fusion of modern design and domestic practicality in his household wares, Wright brought his innovative design to the general U.S. public and changed the face of the American household.

Russel Wright: Good Design Is for Everyone focuses on the most influential and enduring aspects of Wright's art, which called for more informal and easier living through his houseware design and ecologically sensitive landscape design. Good Design collects many of Wright's essays and extensive illustrations, offering significant insight into Wright's philosophies about domestic design and its relationship to the modern American home. This book is both a thorough introduction to Russel Wright's work and a superb study of his creative process.

Russel Wright's Menu Cookbook
by Ann Wright (Author) / Mindy Heiferling (Author) / Gibbs Smith, Publisher (Editor)

Russel Wright is known as a pioneer in mid-century modern design and lifestyle marketing, from his well-known and highly collectible china, flatware and furniture, to his book, Guide to Easier Living. As a single working father with a young daughter to raise, he found the task of organizing daily menus daunting, and quickly grew tired eating the same meal each night. He combined his love of food with a collection of recipes gathered from travel and friends and his nearly-obsessive organizational skills to create a menu cookbook that was simple to use and could help anyone create interesting, balanced, fuss-free meals. When Annie Wright, Russel's daughter, showed them to friend and caterer Mindy Heiferling, they decided the menus deserved to be shared with the public. < BR> Russel Wright's Menu Cookbook: A Guide to Easier Entertaining contains fifteen menus with 65 recipes, each easy to prepare, beautiful in presentation, and always delicious. More than a simple cookbook, this guide offers tips on getting organized, ways to use modern "convenience" foods (like Thai red curry paste or store-bought sorbet), how to set a stylish table, and how to make entertaining a pleasure rather than an ordeal. The menus have a timeless yet modern appeal-from a "Mid-summer Americana Cookout" to a "Green and White Cocktail Party"-this cookbook provides an uncomplicated and creative way to approach everyday mealtimes or unique celebrations.< BR> Mindy Heiferling is a New York City-based chef, food writer and recipe developer. Her articles and recipes have appeared in The Best American Recipes: 1999, Martha Stewart Living, Saveur, and Food & Wine, among others. This is her second book. < BR> Annie Wright is a chef and caterer, and has taught at the New York Restaurant School. She holds degrees in Nutrition and Hotel & Restaurant Management, and is currently a partner in Russel Wright Studios, LLC. She is also a co-founder and board member of Manitoga, The Russel Wright Design Center in Garrison, New York. < BR>
