Changes in Scenery: Contemporary Landscape Architecture in Europe
by
Thies Schroder (Author)
/
Christophe Girot (Foreword)
/
Princeton Architectural Press (Editor)
Today, landscape architecture is assuming a significance which for decades was reserved for architecture. In landscape architecture our aspiration to combine functional designs with artistic vision, the longing to reconcile public demands with convincing concepts, and not least the hope of social integration are united. In the foreword Christophe Girot argues that a creative dialogue between strong identities is vital for the ongoing "Changes in Scenery". The scope of the concepts from eight European countries range from the sensual compositions of Bet Figueras (Spain), to Guido Hager's emphasis on garden art (Switzerland), from the extensive plans of the French firm Desvigne & Dalnoky to the perpetuation of classical Modernism by the Spaniard Batlle i Roig. The large |uvres of Adriaan Geuze (the Netherlands) and Peter Latz (Germany) are also represented as are the provocative experiments of the British firm GROSS. MAX. Carefully selected illustrations accompanied by compelling and descriptive texts and a reflective essay provide a fascinating picture of present-day landscape architecture in Europe.

Back in Print Is modernism fundamentally hostile to nature? How have the radical transformations of the 19th and 20th centuries affected our attitude toward nature and impacted the landscape, as seen in the relationship of modern building to the land, and in the parks and gardens of this past century? Proceeding from the premise that how we shape our physical environment is a fundamental reflection of our culture, this compendium of essays on landscape in the 20th century evolved from a symposium of distinguished historians, scholars, architects, landscape architects, and artists organized by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1988. Presented in a historical perspective, the discussion focuses on the problems and solutions of the 20th century and addresses the issues that carry over into the 21st.

Design with Nature (Wiley Series in Sustainable Design)
by
Ian L. McHarg (Author)
/
Wiley (Editor)
"In presenting us with a vision of organic exuberance and human delight, which ecology and ecological design promise to open up for us, McHarg revives the hope for a better world." ?Lewis Mumford ". . . important to America and all the rest of the world in our struggle to design rational, wholesome, and productive landscapes." ?Laurie Olin, Hanna Olin, Ltd. "This century's most influential landscape architecture book." ?Landscape Architecture ". . . an enduring contribution to the technical literature of landscape planning and to that unfortunately small collection of writings which speak with emotional eloquence of the importance of ecological principles in regional planning." ?Landscape and Urban Planning In the twenty-five years since it first took the academic world by storm, Design With Nature has done much to redefine the fields of landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, and ecological design. It has also left a permanent mark on the ongoing discussion of mankind's place in nature and nature's place in mankind within the physical sciences and humanities. Described by one enthusiastic reviewer as a "user's manual for our world," Design With Nature offers a practical blueprint for a new, healthier relationship between the built environment and nature. In so doing, it provides nothing less than the scientific, technical, and philosophical foundations for a mature civilization that will, as Lewis Mumford ecstatically put it in his Introduction to the 1969 edition, "replace the polluted, bulldozed, machine-dominated, dehumanized, explosion-threatened world that is even now disintegrating and disappearing before our eyes."

Designs on the Land: Exploring America From the Air
by

/
Alex MacLean (Author)
/
James Corner (Introduction)
/
Thames & Hudson (Editor)
The tradition of aerial photography arose from a keen nineteenth-century desire to see "the world in motion." Starting with Nadar's photographic balloon trips, airborne experimentation with landscapes and cityscapes continued through great photographers from Steichen to Burkhardt. With Alex MacLean, we enter a different world. For thirty years, this committed photographer has portrayed the history and evolution of the American land, from great desert spaces to agricultural patterns to city grids. A trained architect who is closely involved in landscape heritage protection issues, MacLean has set out to create a series of pictures that show and explain the universal history of town and countryside. What he has to say may be invigorating or alarming, but it always raises the issue of the landscape's future. This new collection of exemplary photographs taken across the American landscape reflects MacLean's passionate interest in the effects of time, geological movements, shifting landscapes, redeployment, pollution, urban sprawl, and the overlapping of surfaces and activities. More than 400 color photographs reveal in a unique way the physical splendor of America: both the beauty of the ongoing inhabiting of the land and the potential for modern planning to create spectacular environments.

The Edible Estates project proposes the replacement of the domestic front lawn with a highly productive edible landscape. It was initiated by architect and artist Fritz Haeg on Independence Day, 2005, with the planting of the first regional prototype garden in the geographic center of the United States, Salina, Kansas. Since then three more prototype gardens have been created, in Lakewood, California; Maplewood, New Jersey and London, England. Edible Estates regional prototype gardens will ultimately be established in nine cities across the United States. Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn documents the first four gardens with personal accounts written by the owners, garden plans and photographs illustrating the creation of the gardens--from ripping up the grass to harvesting a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs. Essays by Haeg, landscape architect Diana Balmori, garden and food writer Rosalind Creasy, author Michael Pollan and artist and writer Lesley Stern set the Edible Estates project in the context of larger issues concerning the environment, global food production and the imperative to generate a sense of community in our urban and suburban neighborhoods. This smart, affordable and well-designed book also includes reports and photographs from the owners of other edible front yards around the country, as well as helpful resources to guide you in making your own Edible Estate.
