Long neglected, graphic design has been creeping into the consciousness of the general public. In our increasingly visual culture, it is an omnipresent form of creativity, something we are all influenced by whether we like it or not. Every logo, poster and CD cover confronts us with graphic design in some shape or form. It is the basis of all visual communication and arguably the most pervasive creative discipline of our times. Essentially an exhibition in a book, this title presents the 100 graphic designers arranged in an A-to-Z order. Each of the designers is featured over two double-page spreads, which are extensively illustrated with examples of their work. Alongside these examples, a 400-word text by the selecting curator explains his/her choice and illuminates the depicted work. The reproductions are further complemented with extended captions and biographical information on the designer. The book is characterized by the enormous diversity of the 100 graphic designers. Showcasing talents from Minneapolis to Macao, this text opens the door to the work of emerging designers practising in more than 25 countries around the world. It reflects a unique multitude of styles, ideas, and influences: an endless range of creativity from the playful, digital graphics of Eboy in Berlin, to the regional aesthetics of Chaz Mavyanne Davies of Zimbabwe or Ahn Sang-Soo of Korea; from the political awareness of Iran's Reza Abedini, to the more sober and traditional designs of the Italy's Leonardo Sonnoli. Beyond this extensive survey of contemporary graphic design, ten curators were also asked to choose what they consider a design "classic" - a piece of printed design from any era that is of particular significance to them. These "classic" pieces are showcased in the shorter, second part of the book, each accompanied by a brief text explaining how the piece fits into the selecting curator's general view and philosophy of graphic design.

Decoding Design: Understanding and Using Symbols in Visual Communication
by Maggie Macnab (Author) / How (Editor)

We live in a complex world comprised of a handful of some very simple patterns. Patterns are made of basic shapes. These shapes have found their way into human design since the beginning of our time because they tell an eternal tale in a glimpse, and their structure instructs about our connection to the universe. Symbols are intuitive and immediate. Design that references these symbols creates an immediate relationship with the viewer and that is what this book is all about. This title reveals how common symbols resonate at a gut level. Discover deconstructions of famous logos and examples of a variety of different designs that effectively use symbols, patterns and shapes to convey greater meaning.

DesignArt
by Alex Coles (Author) / Tate (Editor)

DesignAddict review:
A sprawling compendium of Art Deco design from across Europe, Euro Deco features a broad range of exemplary graphic ephemera. Culled from Steven Heller and Louise Fili's popular International Deco series of inspirational reference books, the material in Euro Deco comes from Italy, Spain, the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, primarily between WWI and WWII -- the time when the continent gave birth to modern graphic design. Well over a thousand images from posters, packaging, advertisements, menus, and brochures display the elegant geometry and harmonious marriage of typography and illustration that make deco a popular style to this day. A generous package at an attractive price, Euro Deco is poised to be a standard graphic resource for designers, collectors, and aesthetes alike. Steven Heller is the art director of the New York Times Book Review. He is the author of over ninety books on graphic design, popular art, and satiric art. He lives in New York City. - A. Rasmussen -

For well over a hundred years certain artists have blurred the distinction between 'art' and 'design', creating works for which Alex Coles has coined the term 'DesignArt'. In a pioneering study of this dynamic area of art-making, he traces its course from the early twentieth century to the present day, when such works have become a dominant feature of the contemporary art scene and are pervasive in key international exhibitions and biennials. From Matisse's plush interior for Rockefeller's town house to the playful contemporary environments created by Jorge Pardo; from the paintings of Bridget Riley appropriated by the fashion world in the 1960s to the fabric designs Takashi Murakami recently conceived with Marc Jacobs, Alex Coles has identified a major and previously uncharted strand in art history. DesignArt is the first critical account of its diverse histories, polemics and practices. Written in a clear and accessible style and fully illustrated throughout in colour, DesignArt is indispensable for all those with an interest in modern art and design and the relationship between the two.
