Historic companies, Not active anymore as innovators but cashing on the stuff that their great , dead now, owners or art directors did. I do not consider tham as "active design houses" but rather "brands" as their new designs(in decades) are rubbish. No creativity anymore, they are just safe brands.

Possum, You have that tone of disapointment in your style of writing. I want to hug and give a big canned ham to every employee of both Knoll and Herman Miller for providing outstanding quality in their merchandise, and for manufacturing pieces of furniture I collect and will covet for my lifetime. I feel that my aeron chair will become a modern classic, and I am sure that the Knoll Jamaica barstool (1993) is destined for modern classic lane.

Sorry
I'm sorry but...
The Jamaica barstool is not by Knoll.
It is by European manufacturer(Spain)
Amat 3.
As it concerns AERON , well do you really like that ugly "thing" ?

Dude, You need to morph yourself away from the Barcolounger and the Budweiser. My Herman Miller aeron chair is far more comfortable than my Knoll Barcelona chair/ottoman. And my jamaica barstool has that sweet little Knoll labet under the seat. I so much liked the Pellicle mesh used in the Aeron(for both comfort and looks) that I ordered my Eames alluminum group lounge/ottoman in the same mesh...and sweetie, it just smokes. Take some looks at the Knoll Ricchio chair (1990). HOT HOT HOT. Should I go on?

AERON IS UGLY CHIC
BARCELONA IS NOT COMFORTABLE BUT IT LETS YOU SORT OF MOVE AROUND AS YOU WAIT FOR YOUR SHRINK.I DO L O V E THAT MESH.

still... the jamaica stool is not by knoll and this proves that ignorance is always better than half"morphed"
The Jamaica stool is of course designed by Pepe Cortes and is produces and edited by amat-3 in Barcelona Spain.
Does Knoll really puts a sticker of her on ?????? lol what a great company indeed...

The "see through" nature of the pellicle mesh lets me enjoy the aluminum "spine" of the chair when viewed from the front. AND.. AND.. AND I think that Frank Gehry has some bitchy pieces, too. I would love to own a Knoll Power Play (1992) club chair/ottoman. I need more space. But I'm also sniffing around Knoll Stamberg Aferiat (1994) Salsa lounge chair...WAY COOL!!! I'll probably find the space. My eyeballs are young, but I can smell a future modern classic at 15 decibels. Is the whole shootin match nowadays made in Japan by overweight underage babyboomers in vinyl tube tops? Let the Oracle speak.

well, the question is loaded in a way...i mean, are we to compare what the company has done in the past? what they are doing today? keep in mind that alot of the classic pieces that knoll sells today were not made for them, i mean, they didn't come about through a relationship that the company had with the designers. herman miller, i think, has a better track record on that end with charles and ray eames as well as saarinen (i know, knoll has had people like florence knoll, bertoia etc who made furniture exclusively for the company). knoll has products like the barcelona and wassily chairs, but such products had nothing to do with knoll really, they were just licensed, as i understand it. knoll is definately a visionary company, and i prefer the classics they offer over herman miller any day, but i think that herman miller has created those relationships and continues to be at least slightly innovative with new designs today (aeron etc) which i think knoll doesen't really do. vitra is perhaps the company that continues to be more forward thinking, but their products are made for such an exclusive audience that the prices usually put them in the "art" rather than "furniture" category. my two cents

Still the jamaica stool is a design by the great spanish company Amat-3 and despite all the propaganda that its flooding this forum, the great "DESIGN" of this century is not american but of course european (or if american it is european rooted. And yes of course charles and ray eames were to be nothing if they didn't americanised Aalto. Sorry folks but it is so unfare to the european tradition of design to go round-and around the a.m. companies.
