I was glancing through the photos of the huge art collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller that is about to be auctioned by Christie's and these two chairs jumped out at me.
These were first upholstered in nylon hopsak designed by Alexander Girard.
Price definitely doesn't determine good design!

I think you're safe doing the top rail exactly like your original weave.
I don't know who made either one of those, though the table base is the type that i think was first designed by Vlad
